Central to Common’s ethos is the use of development as a tool for good. In the midst of climate and housing crises, our default should be using the land we have to create housing for people most in need – as we have done with Zodiac.   We’re so pleased to announce today a deal agreed with Croydon Council which will see Zodiac’s 73 new homes, provided via the sensitive conversion of a long empty office building, used for emergency accommodation. The apartments will be available for Croydon families facing homelessness: part of the council’s long-term strategy to reduce its reliance on private sector rental.   Local authorities are spending £1.5 billion a year on temporary accommodation. At the same time, thousands of commercial buildings across the country are sliding into obsolescence. Our Climate Resilience Review provided a comprehensive evaluation and framework for developing a robust climate resilience action plan for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The Pineapples awards for place, launched by The Developer, recognise built and future projects and initiatives that make a positive impact on places and people. What a start to the year!🌟🌟🌟 We've got LOADS of new partners getting stuck in and supporting life-changing work with our young people. First up is urban and rural place design practice Planit! They're all about, landscape architecture, urban design, and visual storytelling and are pros at creative engagement and impact assessments for projects across every sector. They’ve already hooked up Brainees with work shadowing at their Altrincham studio, and we’re hyped to see them share their place-making passion with even more Brainees in 2025! 💥👷♀️

✨ New Year, New Role, Big Ambitions! ✨ The year is now in full swing with exciting prospects ahead. I’m feeling inspired, stepping into my new role as Senior Urban Designer and lead of Planit’s Urban Design London team. It’s a fresh new team that brings a wealth of experience and some bold ambitions for 2025. After taking an 18-month personal adventure, career break, and secondment with Planit HQ in Manchester, returning to London has been really inspiring.   The city is buzzing with imaginative masterplans and groundbreaking developments. The common factor with each is that they're all rooted in an ambition to create uplifting places that seamlessly weave into the social, environmental, and physical fabric of their communities.   Planit delivers a highly creative approach to designing regenerative places throughout the UK; creating urban regeneration that delivers for people, planet and place. Keep an eye on my Linkedin page where I’ll be sharing more details of their projects and what I’ve been working on over the coming months.    With healthy competition, inspiring insights, and growing investment in climate-conscious, people-driven design, 2025 is shaping up to be another progressive year. I am excited to collaborate with colleagues across the built environment to bring similarly transformative visions to life.
