We connect the creative, cultural & research sectors to design policy and influence decision makers
About us
We unite the UK's creative, cultural & research ecosystem to co-design policy, influence decision makers and drive positive change... At Culture Commons, we care deeply about the creative and cultural life of the UK. From our world-leading creative industries and vibrant cultural sectors, to the 'everyday creativity' taking place quietly in communities the length and breadth of the country, the UK is home to a rich and dynamic creative ecosystem. The sub-sectors that make up this ecosystem are deeply interconnected but often require very different policy approaches to support their flourishing. These sectors have not had enough attention from policymakers and this has prevented the creative and cultural sectors from unlocking the economic and social potential they can bring to individuals and communities. That’s why Culture Commons bring cutting-edge research and policy development services together to help our clients and partners co-design policy and influence decision makers at the local, regional and national levels. Our work is always evidence-informed, implementable and impactful. As a not-for-profit organisation, our work is also underpinned by values of transparency, collaboration and bringing people who are often excluded from policy making processes to the table. Alongside our traditional consultancy services, we run nation-wide 'open policy development programmes' to ensure that all parts of the creative ecosystem are part of the policymaking process.

Guest blog: From warm words to cold hard cash by Kathryn Welch "Long term funding commitments can result in more of this work, in more places, and liberate creative people and organisations to spend more time making work, rather than investing huge proportions of their energy, time and all-too-scarce resources writing funding applications and repeatedly making the case for support." With over a decade of experience in senior roles across the Scottish charity and arts sectors, Kathryn is a cultural leader, specialising in community development, strategic planning and place-based social change. In this guest blog, commissioned as part of the #FutureLocalCulture open policy development programme on #devolution and increased local decision making, she reflects on her experience as Programme Lead for the Culture Collective programme, a powerful network of 26 community-rooted creative projects across #Scotland initiated by Creative Scotland. We’re delighted to be working with University of Kent on our major open #policy development programme exploring #devolution and increased local decision making. We're grateful to the team in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning for connecting us with the stakeholders that contributed to our evaluation report on New Approaches to Integrated Place Shaping 👉 This includes Medway Council, Historic England and the Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries. The iCCi is an important cultural research organisation within the University. The iCCi team have found the #FutureLocalCulture programme enormously helpful, as they get to grips with the relationship between the university's cultural work and its regional place-shaping agenda. This vital thinking comes at a critical moment for both Higher Education and its civic agendas, and arts and culture in our communities. We’re delighted to be working with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority on our major open #policy development programme exploring #devolution and increased local decision making. Mayor Nik Johnson’s ambition for compassion, co-operation and community, and the C&PCA’s mission to deliver inclusive growth, demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to putting local decision-making in the hands of communities. The C&PCA is on the way to developing a first region-wide cultural strategy, as well as new cultural data indicators, making involvement in the programme especially timely. Through the programme, the C&PCA has helped the 'future of local cultural decision making' partners to explore how a mid-stage combined authority is navigating devolution, how local and combined authorities can collaborate together and how combined authorities can connect with the creative, cultural and heritage ecosystem on the ground. Discover more in this Insight Paper: https://lnkd.in/e8h6X9ZW On the 5th Nov, Culture Commons and our 30 UK-wide partners will be hosting an event to share the findings and recommendations from this year long open policy development programme.
