Defib no’s 232, 233, and 234: Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Ashburton We were recently contacted by Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton as they needed to replace their aging defibrillators. We were only too happy to help such a brilliant organisation by providing 3 iPAD SPR defibrillators and a training model at the price that we pay as a charity, as well as making a small contribution. It’s always a pleasure to help out amazing local organisations like this, knowing the fantastic difference they make in emergency situations! Dan went down to their HQ earlier this week to meet the team and drop off the equipment. • 2024 was our second busiest year on record. We responded to 42 callouts over the 12 months, with two thirds of those taking place within #Dartmoor National Park. It was an eventful year, which included and unexploded WW2 bomb, seven helicopter evacuations, and very sadly four fatalities. We've been working in partnership with Devon and Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and the British Army. We've had three callouts already in 2025, and our volunteers are ready to go at a moments notice - 24 hours a day 365 days a year. You can find our more about our last 12 months in the article on our website, and you will also find links to see how you can support us with essential fundraising. Thank you. https://lnkd.in/eM3s9Dyj

    • Statistics of the 42 rescue callouts in 2024
  • Callout #1 Wednesday 1st January At 16:30 on New Year’s Day the team was called by Devon and Cornwall Police following a request from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for assistance with an individual with a suspected broken leg close to a road but with difficult access near Haytor on #Dartmoor. Despite the darkness and rain, team members quickly located the casualty. With windchill around -2C he was first protected from the weather in a bothy shelter. After assessment, he was provided with pain relief and the limb splinted in preparation for evacuation by stretcher to the road. The casualty then chose to arrange his own transport to hospital with a friend. A combination of him arranging his own transport and our team picking up this incident helped to relieve some of the pressure, faced by the ambulance service, on this exceptionally busy day. The team stood down from its first callout of 2025 at just after 19:00. 26 of our volunteers were involved in this callout. #mountainrescue #dartmoor #devon

  • 🎄4 great ways to enjoy your Christmas walk During the Christmas period a lot of people will be taking to Dartmoor to blow away cobwebs & walk off those Christmas calories. Here are our 4 top tips for a safe and enjoyable walk on Dartmoor this Christmas: 1) 📱Make sure your phone is fully charged & if you have one, take a battery bank with you. The cold weather can drain a battery quickly so don’t get caught out if you need to call for help. 2) 🎅 Wear the correct clothing, even if you’re just planning a short stroll, the weather can change quickly & temperatures can drop fast, so make sure you’ve got your waterproofs with you, warm clothing & suitable footwear. 3) ☃️ Plan your route & let someone know where you are going. Take some food, something hot to drink & a head torch. Fog can make even the most well-known trail unrecognisable so always have your trusty map & compass with you. 4) 🎄Did you know we are on standby 365 days of the year including Christmas Day? We hope you never need to call us for help, but if you do need us, call 999 and ask for the Police or Dartmoor Search and Rescue. Have a wonderful Christmas and please check out our Christmas fundraising appeal for a replacement defibrillators, because if you can spare the cost of a coffee this December then we will be able to carry this essential piece of lifesaving equipment to wherever it is needed. #dartmoor #ashburton #lifesaving #searchandrescue #mountainrescue #defibrillator https://lnkd.in/evDXJ385

  • Callout #42 Saturday 7th December At just before 11:00am the team were contacted by Devon and Cornwall Police to help locate a walker who was lost and fatigued around a kilometre north of Saddle Tor. There were concerns for his health. With Storm Darragh approaching its peak and an amber weather warning of wind🚨, a team of our volunteers who were already at our Rescue Centre were immediately dispatched. The walker struggled towards Haytor where he was located by our team. He was then guided off the hill, assessed, given a hot drink and food and escorted back to the safety of his car and hotel accommodation nearby. The team stood down at just after 12:00. 8 of our volunteers were involved in this callout. #mountainrescue #dartmoor #devon #StormDarragh Video credit: Henry Smith

  • On Saturday our current cohort of trainees were put through their paces in a day-night final exercise. 🌓 This was an opportunity for the trainees to demonstrate a wide range of skills and abilities, performing under pressure in challenging circumstances 🤔. Over the course of eight hours the trainees navigated their way around southern Dartmoor’s open moorland ⛰️ and deep river valleys. In addition to navigation, they were also tested on aspects of technical rope rescue 🧗, radio comms 📡, water safety 🛟, medical treatment 🩺 and team work in a rescue scenario 👏🏻. They are a seriously impressive group and we were all thrilled with their hard work and dedication. It’s a long road to gaining a team jacket 🦺 and qualifying, with many steps along the way, but the end is nearly in sight for the class of 2023. #Dartmoor #Devon #MountainRescue #Charity #Searchandrescue

  • More Than Mountains. 🏔️ It may surprise you to learn that our team don’t just operate on the uplands of #Dartmoor. Our remit also covers the rural and urban areas of South and East #Devon, including #Exeter, #Torbay and all areas in between. This is why this week’s training exercise took place on a farm near Exeter, and included a casualty site within an abandoned railway line. By coincidence, a few hours later at 1:30am on Thursday morning, we received a Callout to assist Devon and Cornwall Police in the search for a missing person in the Teignbridge area. The team stood down at 3:20am after the missing person was safely located. #mountainrescue (Image from training session)

  • Callout #36 Friday 1st November At 18:33, the team were called out by Devon and Cornwall Police to assist in the search for two walkers who had become lost in the dark on paths within the Dart gorge, below Mel Tor. Police officers and a drone had been deployed and had located the lost walkers. An advance party of our volunteers met the officers and walkers and assisted in escorting them out of the steep valley. The walkers were then transported back to their car at Newbridge. The team stood down at approximately 20:30, to carry on with our Friday evening plans. 17 of our volunteers were involved in this callout. #mountainrescue #dartmoor #devon
