    ‘What do diamonds do for people?’ Our Brand Ambassador, Lupita Nyong’o, sought to answer this question by visiting South Africa and Namibia, where diamonds are a key source of wealth and opportunity, providing jobs, local procurement, taxes, and support for biodiversity conservation. Her journey began at the Venetia Mine in South Africa, where over 4,000 people are employed. Lupita also explored the Venetia Limpopo Game Reserve, a conservation success story that’s creating wildlife habitats and offering future tourism and livelihood opportunities. In Namibia, she visited NDTC (Namibian Diamond Trading Company) and Namdeb, both 50:50 joint ventures between the Namibian Government and De Beers. NDTC sorts and values rough diamonds, while Namdeb discovers some of the world’s highest-value gems. Lupita Nyong’o’s journey wrapped up with a visit to the EntreprenHer programme and the #BeFree Youth Campus, both funded by De Beers. These initiatives empower women entrepreneurs and support youth development, creating sustainable futures for communities across Southern Africa. #EntreprenHer, in collaboration with UN Women and local governments, has supported over 2,600 women micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana since 2017, with plans to help 1,500 more. The #BeFree Youth Campus, founded by former First Lady of Namibia Monica Geingos, provides holistic services for youth, from mental health support to legal guidance and skills development, addressing critical issues like Gender-Based Violence and empowering young people.     What an unforgettable evening with the South Africa High Commission in London as we celebrated 30 years of democracy in South Africa.   De Beers’ origins began in South Africa 136 years ago and as our business has evolved, so too has the role that De Beers and natural diamonds continue to play in the country.   At the event, it was the stunning designs created as part of our Shining Light Awards jewellery design competition that took centre stage, with collections featuring De Beers natural diamonds and crafted by talented southern African designers sparkling on the fashion show runway, complementing original clothing designs by eminent South African designer, Gavin Rajah.   The Shining Light Awards originated in South Africa more than 20 years ago and are dedicated to helping to empower emerging designers from our diamond producing partner countries by providing international scholarships and training opportunities.     Building Forever Stories: Chapter 8 Tracr: a pioneering solution for diamond traceability Have you ever wondered about the journey your diamond went on before it reached you?  Natural diamonds have an incredible story to tell as they are transformed from unique, raw miracles of nature to beautiful polished gems sold in jewellery boutiques around the world. With consumers being increasingly interested in the journey of their diamond and its provenance, we’ve been working hard to bring Tracr to the diamond industry – a pioneering blockchain platform that enables participants to record information about a diamond at every stage its journey, from source to store. As the only diamond traceability platform that starts at the source, Tracr will play a key role in advancing the industry’s efforts to enhance confidence in the diamond supply chain. At De Beers, we’re already registering more than two-thirds of our global production by value on Tracr and we’re delighted that a growing number of leading industry players have also joined the platform as Tracr continues to develop a solution that enables participants to give consumers enhanced confidence in the provenance of their diamond.     We’re excited to be in Hong Kong this week to attend the Gem & Jewellery World trade show. It’s always wonderful to connect with our partners in the region and discuss the key trends shaping the jewellery sector. Over the last couple of days, our teams have been sharing more about our Origins strategy, the current market, the diamond industry’s history of overcoming challenges, natural diamond marketing and diamond provenance at a variety of events. Adrian will provide insights into BCG’s recently published ‘The Future of the Natural Diamond Industry’ report and help set the scene for what we need to be thinking about as we shape the future for natural diamonds.     Building Forever Stories: Chapter 7 Helping to close the literacy gap in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories When the closest bookshop is hundreds of kilometres away, literature becomes a luxury and this is the case for many living in Canada’s Northwest Territories (NWT). Our Books in Homes initiative aims to close the literacy gap by donating books to young people in primarily Indigenous communities. Since the programme was launched in 2003, Books in Homes has provided more than 60,000 books to youth living in Indigenous communities close to our operations in the NWT. In 2022, we expanded this initiative by partnering with the NWT Literacy Council to expand the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program to additional NWT communities. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides children under the age of five with a free book every month, along with a fun pack to help parents read with their babies and toddlers and encourage more learning. We’re proud to have worked with the NWT Literacy Council to expand access to the programme to every community in the NWT. Thanks to our support, during 2023 more than 1,000 books were delivered to 115 children in partner communities, with the ambition of extending the program to 200 more children in Year 2.

    Building Forever Stories: Chapter 6 Advancing women business owners with EntreprenHER Women-owned businesses are a catalyst for accelerated economic development, yet women entrepreneurs in our host countries can face unique barriers when establishing and growing their businesses. These can include a lack of access to finance and networks through to bearing a greater share of domestic and caregiving responsibilities outside of work. At De Beers, we’re committed to accelerating equal opportunity and advancing gender equality, both within our own business and within our host communities. Our bespoke programme, EntreprenHER, delivered in partnership with UN Women and local government, supports women entrepreneurs in our host communities in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa to grow their businesses, create jobs and build more secure incomes through dedicated training and mentorship. Now in its seventh year, EntreprenHER has supported more than 2,645 women with businesses as diverse as farming to fashion design. By supporting women-owned businesses in our partner countries, we aim to not only foster economic growth, but also nurture a future where women play a central role in creating long-term prosperity in their communities.     As we continue to put our Origins strategy into action, we are delighted to announce a new collaboration with India’s leading retail jeweller, Tanishq. Complementing our collaborations with Signet in the US and Chow Tai Fook in China, we will now be working with the leading jewellery retailer in another key consumer country for natural diamonds to promote the unique attributes of nature's miracles. Our collaboration will focus on training Tanishq’s retail staff so they can deepen their knowledge of natural diamonds, developing a customer outreach programme to offer Tanishq’s customers the opportunity to learn about, experience and purchase exquisite natural diamond jewellery, and introducing a new nationwide integrated marketing campaign. With India recently becoming the world’s second largest market for consumer sales of natural diamond jewellery, and with a substantial opportunity for further growth, we see exciting times ahead. Because just as India inspires the global diamond industry, we are committed to making sure that the India consumer is inspired by natural diamonds.
