Derby College (DCG) has brought real benefits to Derby City Council by helping to lower the age profile of its workforce and ensuring vital skills are passed on to the next generation. Since 2018, DCG has trained council apprentices in business administration, IT, early years education, sports, catering, and more. Currently, 37 apprentices are enrolled, with additional intakes planned for 2025, reinforcing the council’s commitment to developing a strong talent pipeline. The success of the apprenticeship program is reflected in its award-winning apprentices, including April, Sana, and Lois, who won the Outstanding Apprentice Award in October last year. Their achievements highlight the future quality of the workforce. Apprenticeships provide a valuable alternative to university, and with devolution to the East Midlands Combined County Authority, the council aims to strengthen engagement with schools to promote careers in the public sector. Additionally, DCG has supported the council’s levy transfer, helping SMEs access skilled apprentices, further boosting opportunities across the region.
