Design ID is a creative & ambitious practice of engineers that have built a reputation for providing innovative design.

About us

Design ID has a reputation for producing innovative design solutions with a pro-active approach to working with Architects, Artists, Designers, Developers and Contractors. Our experience of working in multidisciplinary teams and lateral thinking enables us to make a positive contribution at an early stage in the design process, when engineering input can often be used to achieve an elegant and cost effective solution. We have developed the skills required to engineer geometrically and structurally complex projects. Three dimensional computer modelling is becoming an integral aspect in realising many design visions and we are able to use our skills in this area at conceptual stages to help other members of the design team and clients visualise various solutions. Our approach, along with our creative background allows us to work in harmony with Architects without compromising the integrity of their concept. This inspires and drives us to create ingenious, forward thinking but appropriate designs to overcome engineering difficulties and material limitations.

  • In celebration of World Education Day, Design ID proudly participated in the 'Activate Your Curiosity' event held at The Braid, Ballymena. This pioneering initiative, hosted by renowned physicist and television presenter Professor Brian Cox, aims to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. Our team, supported by FP McCann Ltd, Hood McGowan Kirk LLP and Farrans Construction, comprising a senior technician, a digital construction management apprentice, and a civil engineer, delivered an engaging session on The Big Bridge construction. This hands-on workshop allowed students to explore the intricacies of civil engineering and digital construction, sparking their interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) fields. The event, part-funded by the Department for Communities and the Labour Market Partnership, attracted up to 400 young people from across Northern Ireland. Students had the opportunity to engage with hands-on experiments, insightful discussions, and inspiring seminars led by distinguished educators and industry experts. Professor Cox emphasised the importance of nurturing young talent in STEAM fields, stating, "These students have the talent to make a positive difference through STEAM within our local communities, across our planet and beyond. Our mission today is to help unlock this fantastic human resource." The event also featured keynote addresses from prominent figures, including Dr. Gerry Gormley from Queen's University Belfast and Dr. Andy Harris from Wrightbus. Pupils from schools in Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Dungannon, Larne, and Omagh participated, including Ballymena Academy and Slemish College. Design ID is committed to supporting initiatives that encourage young people to explore dynamic career pathways in STEAM. We believe that by connecting students with industry leaders and providing practical, hands-on experiences, we can inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem solvers.

  • Adaptive Reuse of Buildings Series: 5/5 'Weave old with new' The adaptive reuse of an 1840s historic linen building, complemented by a modern extension, has created flexible commercial, office, and research spaces for small to medium-sized enterprises and start-ups at Weavers Court Business Park. Serving as the flagship for these creative industries development in Belfast City Centre, the building offers 2000ml of versatile space, catering to both new and growing businesses, particularly those in the high-tech and TV/film sectors. Through load testing of the existing floors and thoughtful repairs, Design ID demonstrated the value of repurposing the 1840s industrial building, which had originally been slated for demolition. At roof level, executive offices are housed in a lightweight SIPS box, allowing for the addition of an extra floor without the need for structural strengthening of the original building. The new extension wraps around the original structure, tripling the net lettable area compared to the original footprint. A piled solution for the new structure was selected for its low noise and vibration characteristics, minimizing disruption to nearby occupied record studios and electronic research units. The new superstructure consists of a simple steel frame with precast hollowcore floor slabs, creating a flexible floorplate. SIPS panels form an insulated outer shell around the structural frame, achieving exemplary low air permeability and energy efficiency. The design and delivery of the building followed BIM Level 2 standards, with the BIM model used to generate material quantities for benchmarking design efficiency and “lean-ness,” as well as to assist in developing an accurate cost plan from the earliest project stages. #thinkdesignengineer #engineeringexcellence #adaptivereuse #retrofirst #reuse #retrofit #embodiedcarbon #climatecrisis #netzero #creativeengineer Doherty Architects Ltd

  • Adaptive Reuse of Buildings Series: 4/5’ From risk to opportunity’ At the rear of a Grade 1 Listed Building in Mayfair, an extension was added around 1920, with two additional storeys constructed circa 1970. This less prominent addition consisted of a concrete-encased steel frame and precast beam-and-block flooring on the upper levels. The client’s goal was to repurpose this space for use as a commercial kitchen, restaurant, and bar, while also adding an additional floor at roof level. The existing prestressed concrete floor beams were found to contain high alumina cement (HAC) concrete, a material commonly used for precast concrete in the UK from the 1950s to the 1970s. However, HAC concrete has been found to lose strength rapidly when exposed to moisture or heat, posing significant risks for many occupancy types. Due to concerns about its long-term durability, HAC concrete has not been recommended for structural use since the mid-1970s. As a result, Design ID recommended removing and replacing the HAC elements with a new floor structure. This major structural retrofit presented numerous challenges but also offered opportunities to enhance the building’s integrity and spatial characteristics. Design ID employed a load-balancing approach, ensuring the overall loading stayed within the design imposed limits specified in the historic drawings. The solution introduced a lightweight floor system allowing for an additional storey structure to be added. Detailed temporary works sequencing was required, with Design ID involved at all of the project stages. #thinkdesignengineer #engineeringexcellence #adaptivereuse #retrofirst #reuse #retrofit #embodiedcarbon #climatecrisis #netzero #creativeengineer
