Earlier this month we attended the Asda Nuneaton Supported Internship launch! 💚 The site has partnered with North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College to deliver a DFN Project SEARCH supported internship programme which will enable young people with learning disabilities and autism to gain the skills and experience they need to find meaningful employment. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Asda who are key champions of equality, diversity and inclusion in the retail sector. We were joined by Chief Customer Office David Hills who rightly highlighted the interns talents and unique abilities which was a benefit to the business as it enhanced the customer experience. #supportedinternships #InternshipsWork

Delivering the best employment outcomes for students with learning disabilities and autism
About us
There are over 1 million young people in the UK with learning disabilities and less than 6% get into paid employment. We at DFN Project SEARCH aim to buck this trend and provide real-life work experience, combined with training in employability and independent-living skills, for young people with learning disabilities and autism. Our programme equips these individuals with the correct tools and experiences to become a success in life. Our interns remain on roll with their school or college, but are based in a host business. Here the interns participate in three department rotations throughout the year, receiving 800 hours of skills acquisition, while growing in confidence and competence. Helping them develop their career paths is a support and learning network that consists of an onsite teacher and a full-time employment specialist, plus the intern’s family who create a joined-up learning environment and employment goal. Together the team deliver the support the intern needs for their successful transition from education to work through continuous feedback as they study an employability curriculum. Using this model, over 60 per cent of those undertaking a DFN Project SEARCH programme graduate into full-time paid employment. The programme now has 67 local partnerships across the UK, with over 1,000 young people with learning disabilities and autism spectrum conditions being given a pathway from education into work. We have also set up programmes both in Portugal and the Republic of Ireland in recent years, and plan to continue expanding, helping more communities to support individuals with special needs. DFN Project SEARCH’s goal over the next decade is to get 20,000 young adults into paid employment, which would be transformative for them, their families and the community.

📢We’re delighted to announce that for the second year we’ll be supporting young adults with autism through our year-long internship programme at our Norwich offices. This one-year transition-to-work programme is designed for young adults aged 17-19 with an autism spectrum condition and an Education, Health, and Care plan. It’s a fantastic chance to gain valuable skills and join the workforce. The programme is a collaboration between Aviva, The Wherry School Trust, Norfolk County Council, DFN Project SEARCH and Pluss. Together, we're creating inclusive employment opportunities and empowering young adults with autism through specialised training and practical work experience. Interns will work from Aviva’s city centre offices in Norwich, supported by an on-site job coach. The internships will start in September 2025. 📅Applications will open this October. The Wherry School, Norwich – a specialist school for Autistic Learners - will host an open evening about the programme on Monday 14th October 2024, at 4:30 pm to help young people and their families find out more about the internship opportunities and how to apply. Last week the Health Secretary of the Department of Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP visited a supported internship programme at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust! The supported internship at King George Hospital uses the DFN Project SEARCH model and is brought to life by a fantastic partnership between BHRUT, Astrum Multi Academy Trust and the local authority. The Health Secretary said: "“It is great to see a programme that is providing opportunities for people who might otherwise struggle to get their first foot on the ladder, in particular people with learning disabilities." Congratulations to all of those involved 👏 https://lnkd.in/g7P6DGgg

🙎♂️”You are capable of everything. With the right support you can achieve anything.” 📺 Last night our very own Harry Georgiou was on Sky News to discuss the barriers young disabled people face to gain employment. Harry also discussed the Think Work First Report from the UK House of Lords Public Service Committee which recommended the Government extends supported internship provision. DFN Project SEARCH is part of the Internships Work Programme alongside NDTi - National Development Team for Inclusion and BASE (British Association for Supported Employment) which is committed to doubling the number of supported internships in the UK.

In 2023 we gave evidence to the UK House of Lords Public Services Committee inquiry into the transition from education to employment for young disabled people and earlier this year we hosted the committee at our wonderful site at Barts Health NHS Trust. Today, the committee has released their report: Think Work First: The transition from education to work for young disabled people. The report pivots supported internships as a vital part of the solution to bridging the disability employment gap and getting young disabled people into work with 3 of the first 10 recommendations pertaining to supported internships! In summary the Public Services Committed concluded: 🔸 Supported internships are an effective way to support people furthest from the job market to gain experience of the workplace and enter the workforce. They also provide effective support for employers to address cultural and practical barriers to employing disabled people. 🔸The Government should honour the commitment of the previous Government to double the number of supported internships and should take steps to ensure that as many young disabled people as possible are eligible for them. 🔸The Government should take steps to increase the number of supported internships, and should introduce ambitious, time-bound rolling targets for this. Building on the success of supported internships in NHS Trusts, the campaign should include targeted work to increase public sector uptake of supported internships. We are thrilled with the outcome and look forward to the The Labour Party Government’s response to this report. 👉 You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eW7HMPwd #internshipswork
