E3G is an independent climate change think tank, tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate.

About us

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We are experts on climate diplomacy, energy policy and sustainable finance. E3G builds cross-sectoral coalitions to achieve carefully defined outcomes, chosen for their capacity to leverage change. E3G works closely with like-minded partners in government, politics, civil society, science, the media, public interest foundations and elsewhere. We currently have offices in London, Brussels, Berlin and Washington DC. The core of our capability lies with our diverse, experienced and creative staff. E3G’s founding directors have a unique experience working on energy, environment, security policy and diplomacy challenges in the UK Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister's Strategy Unit and as senior political advisors. E3G was founded in 2004 to address the challenge of how to deliver transformational policy change. Our experience has been that the main obstacles to sustainable development lie not in a lack of analysis or available resources, but in the silo-based nature of institutions and decision-makers. We, therefore, work to align politics and policy to leverage strategic outcomes. E3G is established in the UK as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. E3G maintains full independence in all its activities and is funded by a mix of foundations, government bodies and NGOs. E3G is established in Belgium as a not-for-profit association (ASBL) and in Washington as a private company with 501c3 tax exempt status.

🚨New Briefing: Moving towards a holistic transition planning framework in the EU We’re excited to share our latest briefing, in partnership with ECCO think tank shedding light on the evolving landscape of sustainable and transition #finance within the #EU. As the EU strides towards a prosperous, competitive, and sustainable future, all economic sectors must accelerate decarbonisation while bolstering resilience against climate change. The introduction of 'transition' finance into the EU’s sustainable finance framework marks a pivotal shift from traditional 'green' finance approaches. This evolution, while promising, has uncovered gaps in policy coherence that need addressing to ensure effective governance. Our briefing provides credible recommendations on how to promote an ambitious EU governance in transition planning, strategically connecting international developments to EU-wide requirements, through Member States, down to singular economic entities. 🔍 Our Briefing Explores: 🔹International approaches including those from the UNFCCC and G20, highlighting their relevance to EU policies. 🔹The critical role of the EU Climate Law in crafting sectoral roadmaps. 🔹The influence of EU governance on national transition strategies and EU legislation’s role in guiding entity-based transition plans. 📋 Key Recommendations: 1. The European Commission should establish a 'Transition Committee': This would steer the EU towards a unified economic direction for transition, aligning international, national, and entity-level planning. 2. Ensure coherence across governance levels: Enhance the alignment of transition planning regulations across international, EU-wide, and national requirements to facilitate effective transition finance across all governance levels. 3. Develop an EU Single Transition Plan Framework: Consolidate transition plan requirements for EU entities under a single framework, harmonising existing regulations and simplifying transition practices. 📖 Read quotes and the full policy briefing co-authored by Pietro Cesaro, Daniele Ciatti, Beatrice Moro and Jurei Yada here on our website: https://lnkd.in/eZdfaWfV

💼Last week's #AutumnBudget will unleash £100 billion of additional investment in the UK. The biggest portion will be aimed at developing a net zero energy system. The Climate Change Committee estimates that total public and private investment in the net zero transition has to increase from £10 billion a year to £50 billion a year by 2030 to get on track to the UK's climate targets. Investment will be critical to build the infrastructure needed, such as gigafactories, green steel plants and a clean power system. Read our latest blog on the #AutumnBudget here, unpacking what it means for the UK's green economy: https://lnkd.in/eU74A-rn

As we approach #COP29, the need for urgent action on adaptation and resilience is critical. Increasingly extreme weather – from record heat and floods to widespread droughts and fires – is exposing nearly half the world’s population to severe climate impacts. Yet, adaptation financing for the most vulnerable communities remains alarmingly underfunded, with 46 least developed countries (LDCs) receiving less than 3% of the finance needed to adapt to #ClimateChange. In our latest blog, we explore the steps that COP29 must take to close this adaptation gap and safeguard communities worldwide. Swipe through our key priorities to see what COP29 must deliver to close this adaptation gap and secure a safer future 👇 🔗Read the full blog co-authored by Kaysie Brown, Ana Mulio Alvarez and Amy Dodd to learn more about what's at stake and how COP29 can help deliver a resilient future: https://lnkd.in/ewNkYVpt

The event in the vaulted Library building celebrated Todd's career in #climatediplomacy and his influence on the #ParisAgreement. His new book , Landing the Paris Climate Agreement: How It Happened, Why It Matters, and What Comes Next, is a riveting insight into the intricacies and personalities behind the year-on-year progress on global #climate agreements, and on what needs to happen next to accelerate #action. Look out for our interview with Todd which will shortly be released.

Very interesting new report from the World Bank: Rising to the Challenge - A Call to Action for Climate Adaptation and Resilience 🌱 The flagship report, highlights a pressing reality: approximately 1.2 billion people are at high risk from climate-related hazards. However, there is hope! By implementing effective strategies, we can enhance resilience for individuals, communities, and nations. 🔑 Key Messages include: 1️⃣ KEY MESSAGE: Reducing climate and disaster impacts on people, communities, and economies requires more rapid development, more resilient development, and targeted adaptation interventions. Only a whole of-society strategy will allow countries to coordinate efforts across sectors and support people, the private sector, and communities to build resilience. 2️⃣ KEY MESSAGE: A&R readiness assessments for 44 countries and economies identify major gaps and limits in current policies and systems, particularly in poorer countries. These include key gaps in implementing adaptation measures at sector level, addressing broader macrofiscal risks and implications, and monitoring and evaluation 3️⃣ KEY MESSAGE: While not always visible, there are strong examples of effective adaptation practices in all sectors, regions, and income levels. These provide lessons for delivering successful adaptation interventions in both the public and private sectors and offer opportunities to replicate and scale up proven solutions. This report serves as a clarion call to all stakeholders—governments, businesses, and communities—to collaborate in building a resilient future. By sharing and implementing these strategies, we can protect lives and livelihoods in the face of climate change. The new climate finance goal to be agreed at the upcoming COP29 should play a key role on calling stakeholders to scale and enhance efforts in a coordinated and effective way. Let's take steps together toward a more resilient world! 💪🌿 #WorldBank #ClimateAdaptation #Resilience #Sustainability #AdaptationStrategies #ClimateAction https://lnkd.in/egQN3iUk
