The RoADPain study is looking at whether teens with period pain may be more likely to suffer with chronic pain later in life. Following on from the recent news stories that some schools don't consider menstrual pains as being a sufficient reason for pupils to miss lessons (now rescinded), BBC News spoke to Professor Katy Vincent and Dr Lydia Coxon about their research. Excellent work from all involved!
The most comprehensive map of the human endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus, has been created, uncovering diverse cell types and processes, including some that may have a role in conditions such as #endometriosis. The Human Endometrial Cell Atlas encompasses the widest range of menstrual cycle phases ever mapped, revealing new insights into endometrium functioning that can inform health research and help to study, understand, and potentially treat conditions such as endometriosis in the future. 🔎 Built by researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Nuffield Dept of Women's & Reproductive Health, University of Oxford at the University of Oxford, and collaborators, this freely available atlas includes samples from people with endometriosis and those without. 💬 “Having this in-depth and large-scale genomic resource on the endometrium is invaluable if we are ever going to fully understand how the endometrium functions in health and what goes wrong in conditions such as endometriosis. Developing a non-invasive diagnostic test and effective treatment for this debilitating condition has been a priority for clinicians, researchers and those with endometriosis worldwide. While further research and validation is needed, our study suggests that certain cells and pathways are dysregulated in endometriosis and if replicated in additional studies, they could be potential diagnostic and therapy targets in the future.” said Dr Magda Marečková, joint first author of this study. Endometriosis UK have today launched a new Endometriosis Symptom Checker. This simple to use online form will ask questions about the symptoms you’re having and identifies common symptoms of endometriosis. When you’re finished, the symptom checker will automatically generate a letter from Endometriosis UK to share with your GP. We hope that the endometriosis symptom checker will help those experiencing symptoms of endometriosis to start a conversation with their GP, help GPs understand what you’re experiencing and support diagnosis. Check it out or share with your network today: https://lnkd.in/ezRsJyU5

JUST PUBLISHED! Lydia Coxon investigated symptom flares in women with chronic pelvic pain and discovered these are prevalent and clinically important. With >60% of respondents stating flares can stop them from their usual activities, it is clear that more research is required to investigate the mechanisms and characteristics underlying flares. Despite a range of symptoms being reported by patients, triggers are often identified with the underlying mechanisms remaining unknown and no treatments for stopping or reducing the flares. A new review has just been published by the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death on #endometriosis. Endometriosis: A Long and Painful Road looks at the current quality and pathway of care to adults diagnosed with endometriosis. Recommendations include highlighting that endometriosis is a chronic condition, improving training on recognising the signs & symptoms - it's not just bad periods, setting up multidisciplinary teams & clinical networks, recognising the impact on quality of life and providing access to support services. https://lnkd.in/df8bT95q
