Last week, the UK government and Great British Energy announced an investment of £200 million for new rooftop solar panels for hundreds of schools, NHS trusts and communities across the UK. This is the first major project for Great British Energy and marks another step forward in the government’s Plan for Change that sees clean energy action benefiting the British people. It is estimated that the new solar panels will save up to £400 million over the next 30 years so money can be reinvested into front-line public services, while making Britain a clean energy superpower.

We have today announced a £9.6m loan to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to help deliver its ambitious town centre energy network. The innovative new network will provide low carbon heating, hot water and power (electricity) to a range of town centre buildings, helping to reduce fuel bills and future-proof against changes in customer energy needs. The project, delivered by Vital Energi Utilities Limited, will be the first heat network to receive funding from the NWF, and this low-cost long-term financing option will enable the Council and its delivery partners to complete installation of the pipework for the first phase of the project. Commenting on the investment, Lorna Pimlott, National Wealth Fund Managing Director, Local Authority Advisory & Lending, said: “Heat networks have a key role to play in the nation’s transition to net zero and we’re pleased to support Solihull Council in this important project. The NWF’s lower cost of finance will enable the council and Vital Energi to deliver the first phase of the heat network on time and within budget, enabling consumers to cost-effectively decarbonise their buildings while providing greater energy price resilience in the future.” Read more about our investment here: https://lnkd.in/easkxwwb 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: (𝘓𝘦𝘧𝘵) Simon Jones 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳, 𝘝𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘌𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪 (𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵) 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘳 Andy Mackiewicz, 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘩𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭, 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘰 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘩𝘶𝘭𝘭.

Plans to secure a long-term industrial future for Grangemouth have been stepped up to help forge a new path for Grangemouth in low carbon and renewable energy production. The plan, backed by £200 million from the UK government and £25 million from the Scottish government, will help support jobs, unlock investment and drive growth in an area which has a long heritage as a fuel leader in Scotland following the Prime Minister's announcement last month to unlock Grangemouth's full potential. Some of the proposals for the new future of the site include plastics recycling, hydrogen production and other projects that could create up to 800 jobs by 2040 and deliver on the government’s clean energy mission. https://lnkd.in/e3y5eZWM

To help keep the British people safe from the climate emergency and support energy security, we are cooperating pragmatically and securely with China, while also challenging them on issues such as forced labour in supply chains. That's why Energy Secretary Ed Miliband was in China for formal talks to accelerate climate action, including refreshing a UK-China Clean Energy Partnership to securely collaborate on mutually benefitting areas such as clean technologies. While there, the Energy Secretary also: 🟦 Met with National Energy Administrator Minister Wang Hongzhi and Ecology and Environment Minister Huang Runqiu. 🟦 Gave a talk on global collaboration to tackle the climate crisis at Tsinghua University and saw carbon capture and hydrogen power at Energy Valley in Changping.
