In a market where unemployment is at record lows, finding employees with the right skills is more challenging than ever. Recent research by the Ulster University Economic Policy Centre and EPIC Futures NI highlights that beyond the unemployed, there are over 120,000 potential workers available with the right support and training. This week saw the launch of the lastest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor UK and Northern Ireland reports. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research consortium has been measuring the entrepreneurial activity of working age adults across a wide range of countries in a comparable way since 1999. The core of the GEM survey is identical in each country and asks respondents about their attitudes towards entrepreneurship; whether they are involved in some form of entrepreneurial activity, and if so, about their aspirations for their business The latest results for Northern Ireland show that Total Early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) is now at a record high of 9.7%. Encouragingly, there has been a continued rise in female entrepreneurship with the female rate now at 8.2% and closing the gap with males at 11.3%. When the survey first started in NI in 2002 there were around 3 female entrepreneurs for every 10 male entrepreneurs, that has now increased to 7 females for every 10 male entrepreneurs. Immigrants are also found to be more entrepreneurial than the lifelong resident population in line with findings from the UK. Over 2021-23 The TEA rate for immigrants was 13.0% compared to 8.7% for lifelong residents. Encouragingly, the rates for all have been increasing over recent years. 🎉Celebrating the glorious sunshine by reflecting back on the end of the #Employability #Skills module at Queen's Business School for this academic year. The Employability Skills module has run across 10 postgraduate taught programmes and Friday I had the privilege of delivering the final two sessions to #postgraduate #students and enjoying lunch with participants, academics, and our guest speaker. 🌍 In the first session, we dove deep into the fascinating world of cross-cultural work experiences. 🌏 As international professionals, we often encounter #career #culture #shock when transitioning to a new country. ☕📧From tea breaks to email etiquette, some essential topics included: 💡Navigating formality: We explored workplace formality. How formal should your emails be? When is it appropriate to use first names? 💡Time Management Tango: Punctuality, deadlines, and the art of balancing work and personal life—essential skills for thriving in any culture! ⏰📆 💡Adapting to Office Atmosphere: We discussed adapting to different office dynamics and managing expectations to ensure understanding and aid resilience. 🏢🌟 The key takeaway?
