We are pleased to announce we have signed a ground-breaking agreement with the UN’s Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to work together on #decarbonising the cement and #concrete industry, with a strong focus on the Global South. Speaking at the signing ceremony in Austria, Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO, said: “Cement and concrete are a vital part of resilient #infrastructure development. Decarbonizing the cement and concrete sectors worldwide is essential to reducing CO2 emissions and tackling climate change. The GCCA and its members are leading the way on doing so for this important global industry. Our UNIDO Member States face a number of technical, market-related and policy hurdles that make decarbonization commitments even more challenging. That is why I am very glad to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with the GCCA and start a new phase of closer cooperation that will help our Member States overcome those challenges.” Thomas Guillot, our CEO, said: “Through our #NetZero Roadmap and the accelerator programme we have put in place, we are already working with policymakers, governments and industry to overcome procurement and resourcing challenges across the global south. Having this ground-breaking agreement with UNIDO is a natural progression which we hope will fast-track progress in a meaningful way.” Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ex_fUFYF Rana Ghoneim

The trusted, authoritative global voice for the cement and concrete sector.
About us
The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) is the global voice for cement and concrete - the most widely used man-made product on the planet. The GCCA and its members are committed to promoting the unique properties of concrete as a sustainable, durable and resilient building material – a material that will answer the needs of a growing and increasingly urban population that is set to exceed 9 billion people by 2050. The GCCA’s authoritative voice will help ensure that the prevailing views of cement and concrete are holistic and based on robust evidence. Alongside this global advocacy role, the GCCA will gather and publish data against the industry’s sustainability commitments as well as develop member guidelines and initiate research. This is being supported by the transfer of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) activities to the GCCA under the strategic partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The GCCA work programme is organised along three dimensions: sustainability, innovation and the positioning of concrete. Sustainable development of our industry is at the very core of the GCCA’s work and has five pillars: safety & health, climate change & energy, social responsibility, environment & nature and circular economy. We want to drive responsible industry leadership in the manufacture and use of cement and concrete. We will strive to improve the global social and environmental impact of the sector’s activities and products. We aim to foster innovation and collaboration with industry associations and inspiring architects, engineers and innovators across the globe and along the length of the built-environment value chain. Concrete is more than a building material. It provides homes, it connects communities, it encourages trade, it provides energy, it improves health, it broadens minds.

“Governments can do three things. They can set ambitious targets, they can have bolder visions and also include the timeline for delivering on these targets.” Want to hear more insights like this? We’ll be back with the #ConcreteFuture Pavilion at COP29 Azerbaijan this year. 🌱 We spoke to RIBA President Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, at the Concrete Future Pavilion last year at COP. ⬇️ 💚 The Concrete Future Pavilion at #COP29 will be located in the Blue Zone at E4. 🤔 Wondering why the #cement and #concrete industry needs #CarbonCapture? Our CEO, Thomas Guillot's, latest blog discusses the technology and the progress it is making towards #NetZero globally. ⬇️
Carbon capture is not the only answer, but for our essential industry it is a key technology – and it works! 💡 I’ve just returned from a trip to what will be the world's first industrial scale cement plant to produce fully decarbonised cement when it starts production next year. I’ll write that again - net zero cement to be produced next year - no offsets, no fancy accounting, actual net zero cement. The technological marvel is CCUS - capturing the carbon at source and then either using it in other industries or storing it often deep in the earth’s geology. 🤔 Opinion on carbon capture is mixed with some thinking it is kicking the can down the road or a distraction, others it costs too much, others it won’t work, others it allows the fossil fuel industry to keep producing - and means society can not engage now in the urgent decarbonisation that is needed. 🌱 I can only write for my own industry. There is nothing that can replace concrete at the scale of the needs of our planet for durable, affordable, resilient communities and infrastructure, and there is nothing at scale to replace cement, the magic (but carbon intensive) ingredient that binds concrete together. As custodians of this amazing material our members are committed to, and already in the action of, reducing our emissions. Their activity ranges from the use of alternative fuels to substituting other materials into the mix with a less intense carbon footprint, innovating at every stage of manufacture and use, as well as encouraging recycling of our product or using societal waste and building demolition back into the materials in a circular loop. However, there is no question we also need carbon capture and my latest blog addresses why.👇 #CCUS #NetZero #Innovation #CarbonCapture #GreenTechnology

Don't miss out! Our #webinar on 'The role of the cement industry in fighting plastic pollution - INC-5 Plastic Treaty Road to Busan' next week, 29 November from 12:30 - 13:30 UK time. 💻 https://ow.ly/oEvJ50TQuFz The 5th Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, is scheduled to take place from 25 November to 1 December 2024 in Busan, Republic of Korea. We support the United Nations Environment Assembly Resolution 5/14 and the overarching objectives to protect human health and the environment from plastics pollution. We support an international agreement that sets ambitious targets and the enabling policy frameworks to end the global plastics waste crisis. Our webinar will focus on: • Explaining how co-processing can contribute to the reduction of micro plastic release into the sea • The importance of recognizing co-processing as a sound waste management option for plastic waste which cannot be otherwise recycled Learn about the cement industry’s important role in managing non-recyclable wastes and plastics, and how we hope to influence the treaty in a positive way that both effectively addresses plastic pollution while promoting sustainable practices.
