About us

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is the local district authority for the borough of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK. The council serves a population of approaching 100,000 residents, living in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston-on-Sea and surrounding villages. Please see the borough council’s website for information about its services. Norfolk County Council is the other main council serving the borough. The borough is a major UK coastal resort, catering for 5.6 million day trips and 4.1 million staying nights each year, with visitors bringing more than £591 million into the local economy annually. It has also been England’s offshore energy sector capital since 1965, with an outer harbour, enterprise zone, skilled workforce, sizeable supply chain, and prospects of sharing in significant future investment in offshore windfarms and gas platform decommissioning. The council’s six main priorities are: • Economic growth • Housing • Neighbourhoods, communities and the environment • Tourism, culture and heritage • Great Yarmouth town centre • Transport and infrastructure Our ambition is for Great Yarmouth to be a fast-growing coastal “Enterprise Town”. Efforts will be focused on creating the conditions to ensure the borough and its residents are best placed to benefit from new jobs and investment, including from the next generation of offshore energy developments. The community of Great Yarmouth has been self-governing since the Charter of King John in 1209. The Council in its current form came into existence in 1974.

  • 📢 Understanding the Local Plan 📢 We know the Local Plan can seem complex, so we’re here to help! 🏡✨ ✅ What is it? – The Local Plan sets out how land is used and developed for housing, businesses, and infrastructure to shape the future of our borough. ✅ Why do we need it? – It helps ensure the right development happens in the right places, protecting our environment while meeting community needs. ✅ How can you have a say? – You can provide feedback on the plan by 31st January. ✅ What happens next? – The Council will submit the Final Draft Plan to a Planning Inspector who will examine the plan – those who provide feedback before 31st January will have a right to participate and make their case. • 🌟 More Support for Affordable Housing and Homelessness Services in Norfolk 🌟 From April 1, 2025, second homes in the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk, North Norfolk District Council, and Great Yarmouth Borough Council areas will be subject to a 100% council tax premium, doubling the rate unless exemptions apply. Thanks to a collaborative agreement with Norfolk County Council, 25% of the extra revenue raised will go towards funding affordable housing and homelessness services in these districts, areas significantly impacted by second home ownership. 💬 Leaders share their thoughts: 🔵Cllr Alistair Beales (West Norfolk): “This agreement ensures funds raised go directly to communities most affected, delivering much-needed housing and homelessness support.” 🔵Cllr Carl Smith (Great Yarmouth): “This vital £240,000 of new funding for Great Yarmouth will make a meaningful difference for our residents.” 🔵Cllr Tim Adams (North Norfolk): “An additional £1.7m will help us tackle our biggest challenge—providing support for people in urgent need of housing.” 🔵Cllr Andrew Jamieson (Norfolk County Council): “We welcome this initiative, with funds supporting local homelessness services and other vital services like social care.” This agreement highlights the power of collaboration between councils to invest in solutions that matter most to our communities. 🏠✨ #NorfolkHousing #CouncilTax #AffordableHousing #HomelessnessSupport #GreatYarmouth

  • Today we attended Holocaust Memorial Day Service alongside the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Paula Waters-Bunn, with a moving service led by Revd Simon Ward. 🕯️ This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering the past and standing against hatred in all its forms. Organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), this year's theme for the Memorial Day is For a Better Future. The theme aims to highlight that everyone has an opportunity to take action for a better future where people are not suffering prejudice or persecution because of their faith, ethnicity or other characteristic. Every year on Holocaust Memorial Day across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. 💚 #HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD2025 #80YearsOn #LightTheDarkness
