Really excited to share the results of a sustainable hackathon collaboration with Microsoft’s MAIDAP (Microsoft AI Development Acceleration Programme) team. The Challenge Could the MAIDAP team beat Microsoft Azure’s average carbon intensity in the UK simply by shifting workloads in space and time across the heata network? Read the blog to find out the answer! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXTqiPgm — Big thanks to Aarti Dwivedi, Chester Curme, Derenik Haghverdian, Ph.D., Juhi Paralkar, Natalie Isak, Nick Glaze, Omisa J., and Soundararajan Srinivasan, we were hugely impressed by the capabilities of the team and their enthusiasm for heata’s mission and vision. Thanks also to Jen Fox for facilitating. Chris Jordan, Michael Paisley, Charlie Beharrell. #Heata #GreenCloud #AIforSustainability #FinOps #GreenOps #DistributedComputing
About us
Data Centres already emit more carbon than the entire aviation industry, and with AI fuelling a new boom in data centre construction, they will consume almost 10% of global electricity by 2030. heata believes this to be incompatible with a Net Zero future. Backed by British Gas, heata has reimagined the data centre as a network of distributed servers inside people’s homes, where they capture the waste heat from data processing and use it to provide people who need it with free hot water. heata reduces energy use by 80% and helps people in fuel poverty at the same time. With a network of heata units installed in homes throughout the UK, companies are already joining the heata network to reduce the carbon footprint of their IT whilst giving back to their communities.

Another happy heata host! Our distributed network is delivering free hot water to homes in the UK today. What started as a simple idea 'why waste heat' has grown into one of the UK's most innovative and exciting climate battling opportunities. Don't just take our word for it; here we are covered on the BBC and MIT. BBC 👉 https://hubs.la/Q02RsP6W0 MIT 👉 https://hubs.la/Q02RsLMn0

Nice to share this short film about heata made as part of Innovate UK’s Net Zero Heat programme. Find out how heata started, and how we’re reimagining a data centre so that the waste heat byproduct of data processing can be reused to provide free hot water for families 👇
We're excited to present the fifth video in the Innovate UK Net Zero Heat programme’s cohort series, featuring heata. The Net Zero Heat programme accelerates innovation to help the UK transition away from gas for heating. The programme’s cohort includes UK companies crucial to this goal, working together to overcome growth barriers. Heating buildings accounts for 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe, with poorly insulated buildings causing higher emissions. Air bricks contribute up to 15% of a home’s heat loss, wasting 34,000 GWh/year in the UK. Heata began as an innovation project with British Gas, focused on helping those in fuel poverty. Inspired by the waste heat generated by Bitcoin mining, they explored whether that heat could be repurposed. By attaching powerful servers to domestic hot water cylinders, the waste heat is reused to create free hot water for the households. Switching from Bitcoin mining to general cloud computing, their distributed data centre enables groundbreaking sustainable compute with social impact. >> Watch the full video here: https://ow.ly/t2kO50TzP6q #NZHeat #Heata #retrofit #decarbonisation #energy #netzero #domesticheating #innovation #fuelpoverty

Why waste heat? 🔥 Computers get hot, and cooling thousands of servers in data centres requires huge amounts of energy, which in turn is responsible for huge amounts of carbon. 😎 At heata our decentralised network reuses the excess heat from cloud compute for social impact (instead of adding more carbon into our environment). 🏠 By putting our servers in UK homes, we can reuse our waste heat to reduce hot water bills and significantly reduce the carbon impact of processing. 💧 Data centres that use water for cooling might use anywhere between 1 million and 5 million gallons of water a day. We think there has to be a smarter way. Learn more 👉 https://hubs.la/Q02RCsxX0

At heata we take the waste heat from cloud compute and put it to work. It's not just an idea, it's happening right now with 100 UK homes benefiting from free hot water. ⏪ In 2022 we won an Innovate UK Smart Grant to test heata units in the field. 🏠 Hosts like Kev (pictured here) joined the trial, excited by the opportunity to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, and with his heata unit he has done just that! ⏩ With more forward thinking businesses partnering with heata to handle their cloud compute workloads, it’s exciting to be bringing climate and social impact to cloud compute by supporting people like Kev with the byproduct of our processing.
