As part of its initiative 'We All Meet the World Differently', Dubai Airports launched the Sunflower a year ago to deliver an inclusive and seamless travel experience for all People of Determination (POD) with hidden disabilities, “Our success in this endeavour is a result of collaborative efforts with our strategic partners in the airport community, including government entities, airlines and service partners, to deliver a seamless experience for all our guests from kerb to boarding gate.” Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports From collaborating with strategic partners to coordinating a comprehensive communication programme, how did such a large, global airport coordinate the implementation of the Sunflower? We speak to Fatma Taher, Government Agenda Manager - Accessibility & Inclusivity Programme Lead at Dubai Airports, which owns and manages the operation and development of Dubai International (DXB), the world's number one airport for international passenger traffic. About us
Wear the Sunflower Lanyard when you need additional support or a little more time Not all disabilities are visible – some are not immediately obvious, such as autism, dementia, anxiety, visual or hearing impairment. People with visual or hearing disabilities do not always wear glasses or hearing aids. Those with joint problems or chronic pain may not always use mobility aids. Although the hidden disability can make daily living more challenging for many people, it can be difficult for others to recognise or acknowledge. Others may not understand the cause of the problem, if they cannot see evidence of it in a visible way. The Sunflower Lanyard makes you visible If you have hidden disabilities and require assistance, wearing the green Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard indicates that you need additional support or just a little more time. Our Sunflower Lanyard has been purposefully designed to acts as a discreet sign to staff and work colleagues that the wearer has a hidden disability and requires additional assistance. It has become the established symbol for hidden disabilities globally and has been successfully introduced to airports, supermarkets, railway stations and sports venues.

We are pleased to welcome Coca-Cola Arena to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network in the UAE! In a major stride towards inclusivity, Coca-Cola Arena, Dubai's leading live events and sports venue, has become the first arena in the region to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. This milestone underscores the venue’s dedication to fostering an accessible and a welcoming environment for all visitors. Commenting on the official launch of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower at Coca-Cola Arena, Mark Jan Kar, SVP, Entertainment & Content Development, MENA, ASM Global said: “This initiative is especially significant in the GCC region, where the concept of hidden disabilities and inclusive practices is still gaining traction. By leading the way with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower and investing in our team’s awareness and support training, we strive to foster a more inclusive culture. This focus aligns with the broader goals of promoting diversity and ensuring that all individuals have equal opportunities to enjoy live events.” People of Determination can pick up Sunflower lanyards either at the box office (near entrance D) or at the main reception desk (entrances A, B and C) on event days to indicate that they may need extra support. Hidden Disabilities Sunflower 💜 reposted this
“Legibility isn't just about style, it's about making sure everyone can engage with what you're sharing. If your content isn't clear and easy to read, you're missing out on connecting with a huge audience, excluding people who might really want to connect with or buy from you. Make sure everyone can be part of the conversation.” This Colour Vision Deficiency Day, we’re celebrating the work of Kaye Moors, who shares examples of poor colour contrast in branded content to educate people about how inaccessible it can be. Kaye has photophobia, photosensitivity and contrast sensitivity following a brain injury and a stroke. Here are just a few of the examples she’s shared. We're always here for brands that need guidance, so please get in touch itsu Chilly's NUFC get dopa (We’ve got a feeling the image descriptions are going to be helpful to lots of people today!) [Image descriptions: Image one: A message from RNIB says: “Remember to use clear colour contrast in your content.” Below is a screenshot of a page on Chilly’s website, which has a black background covered in brightly coloured bottles. Black text says “Make it yours” but only the first couple of letters are legible because they’re overlaid onto a yellow bottle, and the rest blend into the black background. Small, white text underneath reads: “Personalise your Chilly’s bottle.” Image two: A message from RNIB says: “Take care when using photos as backgrounds under text.” Below is a screenshot of a page on Newcastle United’s website. There’s a photo of their women’s squad celebrating, with the word “Women” in bold as a title. The body text is written in grey and blends into the dark tones of the photo underneath. It says: “Becky Langley’s team secured back to back promotions last term after winning the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title.” Image three: A message from RNIB says: “Don’t use white text on a pale coloured background.” Below is a screenshot of a page on Get Dopa’s website. The background is a very pale orange, overlaid with barely visible white text which says: “Dr Rachel Gow, Nutritional Neuroscientist and author of ‘Smart foods for ADHD and brain health.” Underneath is slightly clearer, but still not clear enough, darker orange text which says: “get dopa includes powerful amino acids, minerals, vitamins, probiotics, alongside plant-based ingredients. The ingredients are well-known for their ability to support energy, cognitive function, mood.” Image four: A message from RNIB says: “Check animated elements – do they get in the way of the text?” Below is a screenshot of a page on itsu’s website. There’s black text on a white background, which is good, but there’s an animation of little bits of veg falling behind it, so there are dark pieces of lettuce getting in the way of the wording. The text reads: “Itsu is healthier. We prepare fresh, Asian-inspired, nutritious food on the spot, which is steamed (not fried) and packed…”]
