Very encouraging to see the latest passenger and revenue figures from Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom which show that rail passenger numbers grew 7% in the last quarter year-on-year, and passenger revenue figures grew 8% over the same time period. The average of passenger numbers recorded from 15 February to 2 March 2025 are at over 101% of the 2020 pre-pandemic peak, which had marked the second highest passenger numbers on record, all of which highlight how well rail has bounced back. Despite challenging economic times and the prospect of restructuring it is a clear signal that the Government must continue to invest in growing the country's rail capacity, to support future transport needs, as well as #jobs #GVA, #innovation #economicgrowth and #regionalproductivity. #connectivitymatters #economy #rail #infrastructure #transportnetwork

Great blog from Jason Prince at Urban Transport Group - we agree, celebrating 200 year of rail provides an opportunity to reflect on the what needs to happen to provide the county with the modern efficient transport network it requires. Investing in #railinfrastructure isn't just about laying tracks and building stations; it’s about creating a network that meets the needs of communities and supports economic output. #rail #newrail #infrastructure #connectivitymatters #economicgrowth #railways #railnetwork #transportnetwork https://lnkd.in/eBvbHDWn

Our recent submission to the HM Treasury Spending Review consultation identifies and advocates for a cost efficient and deliverable path forward for #HS2. The focus is on maximising the project’s economic benefits within a constrained budget and accelerated delivery timetable. we encourage a re-scoped HS2 to a “Euston-Crewe core” which would act as a key driver of the Government’s economic growth ambitions, while providing additional and urgently needed national transport capacity between #London, the #WestMidlands and the #NorthWest. #rail #connectivitymatter #economicgrowth #hs2 #railinvestment #railway #supplychain You can read the full submission here: https://lnkd.in/dvQYdjyR

Thanks for the update - as an organisation representing the HSR supply chain we look forward to supporting the reset...
I’m just over 3 months into my role as Chief Executive of HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd and I’m pleased to share my first project update video. 🎥 We now have a 31,000-strong workforce working across a 140-mile route to build the railway, with precision engineering and iconic structures. The prize is clear: better journeys and economic growth. However, as I told the Public Accounts Committee in December, the project faces serious challenges. Costs are rising, and the construction schedule has fallen behind. HS2 needs a reset, as Crossrail did in 2018. There, I found a programme that, like HS2, had incredible engineering but had lost its way. The programme had fallen out of sequence, costs were rising, and the schedule was broken. Today, the Elizabeth line is a resounding success, and one day, HS2 will prove its worth too. But to get there, HS2 will need a new, realistic cost and schedule and a higher-performing organisation and supply chain to break the cycle of delays and cost increases. In this video, I outline our focus this year to get HS2 back on track. We have a roadmap for the reset and are working with our partners and the Department for Transport to set a new cost and delivery schedule, improve our supply chain relationships, and build a fitter HS2 Ltd organisation. I'll keep you updated on our progress throughout the year. Watch the video on our YouTube channel 👉

More significant progress on #HS2 with the steel beams lifted into position for the construction of a bridge that will allow HS2 trains to pass under the A43 near Brackley. The A43 links #Oxford, #Brackley and #Northampton and provides access to Silverstone and connections between the M40 and M1. Preparation for the work began much earlier in 2023 when HS2 engineers, working closely with National Highways, realigned the road to create an ‘island’ between the two carriageways big enough for the construction of the new bridge deck. This meant they could sink 52m deep piled foundations and then built the pile caps and piers that will support the 66-metre-long bridge deck carrying the road. Earlier this month they lifted the last parts of the seven steel beams that will support the bridge deck using a 750-tonne crane. With the beams now in position, the team will focus on the concrete deck and parapets. Once the bridge has been built, the road will be moved back onto the new bridge and excavation can begin to create space for the railway to pass underneath. This multi-stage approach was designed to keep traffic flowing and disruption to a minimum. #highspeedrail #infrastructure #rail #railway #engineering #innovation #construction #economicgrowth #skills #supplychain

Our recent submission to the HM Treasury #SpendingReview consultation identifies and advocates for a cost efficient and deliverable path forward for #HS2. We advocate for maximising HS2’s #concession value at minimum viable scope and cost, which will maximise the project’s #economicbenefits within a constrained budget, accelerating delivery, and ensuring a substantial #financialreturn to the Treasury - making it a a key driver of the Government’s economic growth ambitions, while providing additional and urgently needed national transport capacity between London, the West Midlands and the North West. #rail #railinvestment #highspeedrail #longtermstrategy #connectivitymatters #transport You can read the full submission here: https://lnkd.in/dvQYdjyR

Some incredible stats coming forward in some new research just published looking at the economic impact on the area of the construction of the #HS2 Old Oak Common station. "From trains to cranes: HS2 and the West London development boom" sets out how regeneration activity and investment has surged in the area since HS2 gained Royal Assent in 2017. #rail #railway #highspeedrail #railinvestment #connectivitymatters #OldOakCommon #London #WestLondon #economicgrowth #economy

Latest article from Greengauge 21 which reviews recent research on cost rises...
Following the latest #PublicAccountsCommittee report on #HS2, we have looked at recent research into the reasons why HS2 build costs have continued to rise. “This review from #ManchesterBusinessSchool researcher Graham Winch gets behind the now routine interrogations by the Public Accounts Committee”, says our Director Jim Steer, “and pinpoints a failure of all parties to recognise that lengthy delays in the planning process have knock-on consequences for construction schedules.” The report also takes apart a suggestion in the new research that the pursuit of greater journey time savings as the project progressed drove an increase in capital costs. “It was those objecting to the project who were relentlessly riffing around the pointlessness of ‘getting to #Birmingham a few minutes faster’, not HS2 Ltd who recognised from the start that this project was all about building network capacity.” You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ecQTYuR8 #rail #highspeedrail #economiccase #railways #railnetwork #highspeedrailnetwork
