Are venues just four walls, or can they be a force for good? After taking part in a great panel discussion at International Confex, one thing is clear: community-based venues are shaping the future of events. They’re not just backdrops; they’re hubs for connection, catalysts for change and champions of social impact. For example, at Sands End Arts & Community Centre, this is built into the very fabric of the venue. Every event held there helps fund local social, cultural and artistic programmes, ensuring that events don’t just happen; they leave a lasting legacy. It’s something we see more and more in our work at Evolve Events, where clients are actively seeking venues that align with their values and create real impact. Why does social impact matter for venues? It’s not just about sustainability anymore. It’s about asking: ✔️ Who benefits from this event beyond the attendees? ✔️ How does this space contribute to the wider community? ✔️ What’s the long-term impact beyond the final guest departure? Venues that prioritise social impact attract purpose-driven clients who are looking for spaces that align with their values. And that’s where the industry is shifting. What’s next? Events are evolving from minimising harm to actively creating regeneration. Attendees expect ethical choices, corporates are stepping up their CSR, and local communities are pushing back against events that just take. The future of venues? More community hubs, more collaborations and more spaces that drive real change. So, how can venues step up? By making their impact visible. Hiring locally? Shout about it. Cutting waste? Show the data. Embedding purpose? Make it part of the story. The question isn’t just 'how sustainable is your venue?' it’s 'how much good can your venue do?'
