Hundreds of representatives from industry gathered at a two-day event in London to hear a series of panel talks – including one featuring HMGCC CEO George Williamson.  The Resilience Conference featured an array of speakers from companies and government organisations talking about defence, security and the role that startups can play.  HMGCC took part in a panel moderated by Tom Whipple from The Times, which featured our CEO examining the ways in which academia and industry can better work with national security.  The HMGCC Co-Creation team also ran a break-out discussion session in which they focused on the experiences of companies working on national security challenges.  More than 400 attendees including more than 100 leading tech investors were present at the event. #ResilienceConference #NationalSecurityEngineering

Government offices follow rigorous guidelines to ensure any rented spaces used for its work are as secure as bespoke buildings. In this latest challenge, HMGCC Co-Creation invites companies and academia to devise a solution that can be retrofitted in offices or other locations used for government work to enable soundproofing for secure conversations. HMGCC Co-Creation is a pilot initiative which involves reaching out to academia and wider industry to help find solutions to national security challenges. The challenge is looking for an innovative solution to providing acoustic dampening. The solution needs to be easy to install and flexible in how it is used. More details about the challenge are available from our collaborators. For the full list of collaborators please visit our Co-Creation page: https://lnkd.in/exqsSn3w

HMGCC, which describes its role as “national security engineering”, invited The Times to visit because it recently won a prestigious award from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Unusually for an award-winning engineering facility, it is not keen to say what it got it for. All Williamson will later say is: “Our core customers have pretty unique needs.” Then, with just a small amount of weariness: “We should get this out of the way. A lot of people compare us to James Bond’s Q,” he says, referring to the boss of the workshop in the basement of MI6 that supplies Bond’s gadgets

We are delighted to announce that a prestigious medal has been presented to HMGCC, honouring the work of thousands of engineers and technologists over our 86-year history.  During an awards ceremony last night, our CEO George Williamson accepted the President’s Special Medal for Engineering in the Services of Society from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng).  The medal was presented by the Academy’s President, Professor Sir Jim McDonald in front of an audience made up of senior representatives from the engineering, technology and government sectors.  HMGCC was founded in 1938 as a specialist organisation for overseas wireless communications. Today, as the home of national security engineering, HMGCC works on the latest technological challenges, from cyber security and AI to creating tech to help with intelligence gathering and secure communications.  George Williamson said: “Over the decades and, for obvious reasons, we have always had to keep silent about our important work in keeping the country safe. But this medal is an important public acknowledgement of the incredible innovators we have at HMGCC. I’m so proud of this work and I’m delighted that their contribution to society has been recognised with such a special award.” Image shows George Williamson, CEO of HMGCC accepting the award from Royal Academy of Engineering President, Professor Sir Jim McDonald. #HMGCC

When it comes to buried treasure, Hanslope Park has a story to share. This summer saw the first public display of a mysterious artefact – a bag of once secret code sheets found buried in the ground at Hanslope Park. Dating back to the 1940s, the sheets bearing formerly secret codes were unearthed during construction on site for a new building used by FCDO Services, back in the 1990s. Since then they have been in HMGCC’s collection, but were recently used in our display for the HistoCrypt 2024 conference at Kellogg College, Oxford. Written in English and Japanese, the sheets, believed to have been used by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), were made from silk so they could be easily folded and hidden. The SOE was responsible for encouraging and supporting resistance group activities in enemy occupied territory. The sheets include the codes for phrases needed by operatives. The messages would have been sent by morse code. Phrases included: “Surprised by enemy and taken prisoner” “Great damage was done to target” “Hurry as fast as you can.” No one is now sure how or why they came to be buried at Hanslope. #HMGCC #SecondWorldWar

A new set of student interns has joined HMGCC for an eight-week stint, hoping to learn more about the complex world of cyber security.  HMGCC is one of the organisations supporting National Cyber Security Centre's CyberFirst programme by inviting groups of students in to learn more in a real work environment.  HMGCC has been supporting the scheme since 2018, when it took in its first batch of students to work alongside software and security research experts. Since then, it has received multiple awards from NCSC for its work with interns.  Daniel, who leads the programme, is a former CyberFirst intern. He first joined as an intern in 2019 and now works at HMGCC as a software engineer.  He said: “CyberFirst is a great way to bring people in who have an interest in cyber and computer science, showing them the kind of environments where they can work and the important roles their skills can play in keeping people safe.”  #HMGCC #CyberFirst #NCSC
