#humanrightsday may have passed, but the spirit of advocacy continues to sail with us. A team from the HFW London Shipping Department have walked 60km over two days from Colchester in Essex to the Hague in the Netherlands, to raise money for the charity Human Rights at Sea (HRAS). This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Hague Rules, central to the work of maritime operators across the world. HRAS advocates for justice and protection for seafarers. HFW worked with HRAS on the development of a new Geneva Declaration, designed to define and defend the human rights of the global maritime population and those crossing the world's oceans and seas, and are proud to continue to support its vital work. We are pleased to continue to support such an important cause. Setting off in the morning of Saturday 11 May, 24 colleagues walked along the Essex Way through the beautiful Dedham Vale and along the River Stour, before arriving in Harwich Saturday night. Thank you to our client Stena Line for a smooth crossing onboard the brilliant Stena Britannica. There is nothing a group of shipping lawyers enjoy more than a night on a ferry, and in our comfortable cabins we were happily carried across to the Hook of Holland. Ian Hampton on behalf of Stena Line said "“We were delighted to host our partners, HFW, onboard Stena Britannica and to support them in their charity walk to the Hague to raise funds for Human Rights at Sea. As supporters of the Seafarers Charter, protecting the rights of our seafarers is a cornerstone in our business as we aim to nurture an inclusive and diverse workplace across our network. At Stena Line, our core value is care - for our customers, resources and each other - so we’re proud to support such an important cause which protects and advocates for our people at sea.” The team disembarked in the Netherlands, and walked Day 2 amongst the sand dunes of the Dutch coast, before reaching their final destination outside the International Court of Justice in the Hague. It had been a long and challenging trek on both days and all 24 walkers were delighted to have completed the journey! Many thanks to all who have generously supported the team so far. Happy #womeninmaritime in loving memory of all those brave women ❤️ In loving memory of those who were bullied and mocked, who heard they chose the wrong job, and the wrong ship. In loving memory of those who were catcalled, intimidated, harassed, assaulted and abused at their workplace, on a ship, in the middle of the ocean/nowhere. In loving memory of those who were manipulated, used, exploited, taken advantage of, and treated less then human. The women who were seen as 'unprofessional', unfit for the job, or 'difficult' when they spoke up for themselves or other minority groups. These women should be celebrated most, especially today! And especially because this #internationaldayofwomeninmarime is about #safety (!) Do you want to learn about safety International Maritime Organization and International Labour Organization?? Then please listen start to listen to the experiences of women in maritime for real, and listen to the hidden violence that they express. Listen to the people who were abused, and lost their job as a consequence (or their life 💔) (like the woman who was forced to marry the Captain that raped her at her job, and became a housewife stuck home). People who were bullied, called stupid and systemically denegraded and underestimated. #safety #humanrights #diversityinclusion Human Rights at Sea (HRAS)

🌊🚢 How do you solve a problem like P&O Ferries? Two years have passed since the shocking and controversial dismissal of nearly 800 seafarers by P&O Ferries, a move that was executed without any notice or consultation. Yet, the questions about the company's treatment of its workers continue to linger. We are walking from Colchester to The Hague to raise money for Human Rights at Sea (HRAS). Please follow the link below to support this great cause!
2024 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Hague Rules, central to the work of maritime operators (and lawyers) around the world. To mark this occasion, in May this year myself and a team from HFW will be completing a walk from Colchester to the Hague, to raise money in support for Human Rights at Sea (HRAS). Walking over 50km through the south of England and along the Dutch coast, HFW are delighted to be raising money and awareness for an immensely important cause. So much of our day to day lives rely on the vital work of seafarers. From global trade to food production, many of us take for granted the mariners behind the scenes. Sadly, exploitation in the maritime sector is common place, and many seafarers see their fundamental human rights abused and degraded on a daily basis. Human Rights at Sea (HRAS) is a brilliant organisation that works tirelessly to raise awareness of the fact that human rights apply at sea as they do on land. This includes promoting the Geneva Declaration on Human Rights at Sea, which sets out the process of ensuring human rights at sea are respected, and abuses are detected and put to an end. HFW are eager to support such an important organisation, and together we are working to raise as much as we can for this incredibly worthy cause. Please consider donating whatever you can to our JustGiving page: https://lnkd.in/eUxUBv28
