Following an incredibly inspiring Women in Planning North East Career Reflections event yesterday - I've been reflecting on my own journey as a woman who feels comfortable in the construction and planning field and reminding myself that clearly not everyone shares the same experiences.    When I chose to study Civil & Structural Engineering at university, I wanted to stand out and excel as a woman in a male-dominated field. I'm still striving to do that, thankfully the barriers are slowly coming down — but not entirely. There are still instances where some men are only promoted or hired because of their gender. Thankfully, HUSK is different, where being the best person for the job truly matters. Returning to work when my children were young was a decision I made with my career in mind. I felt it gave me the best chance to progress, though I'm not sure if that was the right or wrong approach. Hopefully, women who choose to take more time off with their babies are no longer at a disadvantage. It’s funny how much people juggle in their personal lives — men and women alike. A big shout-out to everyone balancing multiple roles. Thank you, Chris Pipe, for your inspiring words yesterday. Like you, I come from a working-class background. I’m a graduate, wife, mother, U13 rugby team manager, supporters' bus organiser, taxi driver for my kids, a friend, and a daily gym-goer. The list could go on… As we celebrate International Women’s Day this week, let’s honour both the women AND men who see beyond gender and focus on what really matters: people.  Happy International Women’s Day #IWD2025
