Award-winning architecture with a positive impact on users, communities, and the environment.
About us
IF_DO was founded in 2014 by three good friends, bored by inaction and excited by the possibility of doing things differently. We believe architecture has the power to improve lives and make communities happier and stronger. We have a knack for building relationships, exceeding expectations and delivering projects with people at their heart. We won the first competition we entered, The Dulwich Pavilion, and its success led to work across Education, Arts, Community, Workspace and Housing. We are a close team who hold each other to the highest standards. Our growing reputation is for well loved and thoughtful work. For appointment to public sector projects, IF_DO is on the GLA Architecture + Urbanism (A+U) Framework for: Lot 5 - Civic, Cultural and Social Infrastructure; and Lot 6 - Commercial, Workspace and Industrial.

Exciting news! Our Magdalene House project, a pioneering hemp-based construction in the New Forest, has been granted planning permission and is featured in the Architect's Journal. Working with Natural Building Systems this single-story, 159m² residence will be built using a low-carbon, modular cassette system, aiming for a negative carbon footprint of -36.25 tonnes of CO2e. Magdalene House combines local agricultural architectural influences with contemporary sustainable design principles, clad in red corrugated sheeting. Designed to respond to solar orientations and programmatic requirements, the building features three bedrooms and generous living spaces with strong connections to outdoor areas. The client sought an inherently sustainable home in harmony with the landscape, and this project delivers on that vision. A re-wilding-led landscape strategy will also promote biodiversity on the 5.3ha site. Read more about this innovative project in the Architect's Journal: [Link to the AJ article: https://lnkd.in/eFxn-Nqe Thanks to our collaborators Natural Building Systems and also to Architects’ Journal Anna Highfield Richard Waite for featuring the project. #sustainablearchitecture #hempbuilding #ecofriendlydesign #architecture #sustainability #innovation #design #carbonnegative #newforest #residentialdesign #architectsjournal #planningapproval

Delighted to announce our appointment by Margate Creative Land Trust (MCLT) to lead the conversion and development of a former car showroom into dynamic creative workspaces on Harold Road in Cliftonville, Margate. This £1.3 million project, seed funded by the Margate Town Deal, will transform a series of existing buildings into a hub for creative enterprise and community engagement. https://lnkd.in/ePGPFy4w The project will create a mix of creative workspace typologies, complementary uses, and public-facing amenities, all while prioritising sustainable retrofit, low-carbon design principles, and material reuse. We were also up against some seriously talented firms in the tender process – charleshollandarchitects, Assemble, and Office S&M Architects. We have huge respect for their work and are honoured to have been chosen alongside them. Their involvement highlights the importance of creative workspace in Margate. We look forward to collaborating with MCLT, the Margate community, and other stakeholders to deliver a truly impactful and inspiring space. More updates to come - and a big thanks to the Architects’ Journal for their article on this today. #Architecture #CreativeWorkspace #AdaptiveReuse #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableDesign #Regeneration #Margate #Kent #IF_DO #MCLT #TownDeal #Culture #ArchitectsJournal

🍍 Thrilled to announce that Hastings Commons has been shortlisted for The Pineapples 2025 Place in Progress award! For the past 6 years, we've been working alongside this remarkable community-led initiative, providing architectural services for the transformation of The Observer Building, Eagle House and other significant buildings in the White Rock area of Hastings. The Pineapples awards celebrate projects making genuine social, environmental, and economic impact. This nomination, following Hastings Commons' recent World Habitat Award gold win, recognizes how thoughtful architectural intervention can support genuine community-led regeneration. We're proud to have helped shape spaces that enable: • Affordable homes • Capped-rent workspaces • Community facilities • Sustainable futures for historic buildings Special thanks to Hastings Commons for trusting us with their vision, and to everyone who has contributed to this journey. Looking forward to the judges' presentation in February! #ArchitectureForGood #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableArchitecture #Hastings #PineappleAwards2025 #RegenerationArchitecture #SocialImpact The Developer and Festival of Place

❤️ Hastings ❤️ If you have a spare 40mins then check out the latest AJ climate Champions podcast with our very own Sarah Castle talking about our work at the Observer Building in Hastings. It’s been a joy to work there for almost 6years and a pleasure to share the story… https://lnkd.in/e6jgSimg
Still pinching myself after being invited onto the AJ Climate Champions podcast... and an absolute joy to chat with the incredible Hattie Hartman HonFRIBA and Rachael Owens This episode focuses in on our work at the Observer Building with Hastings Commons - a project which has been a labour of love for our team at IF_DO over the past six years - and so being able to share this story and its impact on the podcast felt really special. In our conversation, we discuss how our team has breathed new life into this magnificent 1924 building - transforming it from three decades of neglect into a thriving community space. Through a 'pod' (phased organic development) approach and the power of community land trusts, we discuss how design can create lasting, affordable spaces that truly belong to local people. It's a project that perfectly captures our belief that good design isn't just about buildings - it's about building community. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/ejFJ_Zat #Architecture #CommunityDevelopment #Sustainability #UrbanRegeneration #SocialImpact #HastingsCommons"
