Transporting Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) cargoes carries significant risks, with past incidents, including fatalities, highlighting the dangers associated with such cargoes. The International Group of P&I Clubs has previously issued Circulars on DRI cargoes to raise awareness and improve safety measures. From January 2025, DRI - Type D, By-Product Fines with a moisture content of at least 2% becomes a mandatory part of the IMSBC Code. In collaboration with Burgoynes and INTERCARGO, the IG has prepared a Circular summarising the key points of the Type D entry, along with additional guidance, observational notes, and explanatory insights from Burgoynes. About us
The International Group of P&I Clubs (the IG) is an unincorporated association of the 12 principal underwriting Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Associations (Clubs) and their Affiliated Associations that between them provide liability cover (protection and indemnity) for approximately 90% of the world's ocean-going tonnage. Each IG Club is an independent, non-profit making mutual insurance association, providing P&I insurance cover for its shipowner and charterer members against third party liabilities relating to the use and operation of ships. Each Club is controlled by its members through a board of directors, or committee, elected from the membership. IG P&I Clubs cover a wide range of liabilities, including loss of life and personal injury to crew, passengers and others on board, cargo loss and damage, pollution by oil and other hazardous substances, wreck removal, collision and damage to property. Clubs also provide a wide range of services to their members on claims handling, legal issues and loss prevention, and often play a leading role in coordinating the response to, and management of, maritime casualties. One of the main roles of the IG is co-ordinating the operation and regulation of the P&I Clubs’ claim-sharing agreement (the Pooling Agreement). All qualifying claims in excess of US$10 million are shared between Clubs in accordance with the terms of the Pooling Agreement. Much of the Group's work involves defining and refining the scope of cover for pool claims, and the rules and guidelines under which claims are shared. This claim-sharing agreement is underpinned by a very extensive, annually renewed, market reinsurance programme. The Group also provides a unique and invaluable forum for sharing information on matters of concern and an effective voice to speak collectively on important industry issues, for example on international conventions and legislation affecting shipowners’ liabilities and related insurance matters.

Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025 was attended by the Group this week. Group Chair Andrew Cutler, Group CEO Nick Shaw, and Camilla Slater had useful meetings on behalf of the Group with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to discuss common issues and aims, and with the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) (together with John Martin) looking at how to collaborate on maritime education. There were also multiple Group Club speakers at #MarineInsuranceAsia, with Camilla reminding the meeting about the Group's approach to E-Bill platform approval. With 10 of the Group Clubs having offices in Singapore it remains a key centre for the Group’s Asia Pacific outreach.

Yesterday, the Group hosted the biennial SCR Forum in collaboration with the ISU’s Associate Members’ Day. The event brought together Special Casualty Representatives (SCRs), Club representatives, salvage contractors and property insurers to discuss the practical challenges of the SCR role in the modern world. We would like to extend our thanks to our speakers, all of the attendees and to the INTERNATIONAL SALVAGE UNION for an informative morning of presentations at the ISU Associate Members’ Day.

Sam Kendall-Marsden, Chair of the Large Claims Committee and Nick Shaw, Group CEO, have spent the past week conducting a series of workshops and meetings under the Group’s MOUs with Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil. As well as sharing information on the Group, the workshops involved collaboration with the maritime adminstrations on a case study to help with contingency planning in the event of a major maritime incident. The Group is most grateful for the good cooperation from all of the administrations as well as to the correspondents and IG Club representatives in each jurisdiction in particular Katia Oliveira who have helped to coordinate the events.

Annie Stow was honoured to have been given the opportunity to give a presentation on behalf of the Group to the students at Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law at Swansea University. The presentation focused on the purpose and role of P&I Clubs, the Group, and working in Claims. #PandI #shipping #maritime #future
Another brilliant guest lecture from Annie Stow representing the International Group of P&I Clubs on the role of Clubs and IG Group in Shipping. Annie is a qualified lawyer who focuses on the Group’s Education Committee. Annie is responsible for the P&IQ as well as enhancing and expanding the Group’s education outreach program. This was a well attended and an interesting one for our students. We enjoy a very close relationship with the IG Group of P & I Clubs and each year several of our LLM students find employment in this sector. More guests from shipping, finance, IP and tech sectors are coming to Swansea. Apart from visits to employers we also bring London market representatives to Swansea to provide guidance to our students. Onwards and upwards!
