On #InternationalDayOfEducation Members of Parliament reaffirmed the urgent need to invest in quality education for all - because learning is a right, not a privilege.
🇬🇧 In the UK, Bambos Charalambous, Co-Chair of APPG on Global Education and International Parliamentary Network for Education member, led a debate in UK Parliament on FCDO support for global education. Minister for Development Anneliese Dodds responded, highlighting the UK’s commitment to education worldwide.
🇺🇸 In the US, Members of Congress Grace Meng, Mike Quigley, & Brian Fitzgerald introduced a resolution affirming the US’s leadership in education for all and urging greater investment in global learning.
The Resolution was cosponsored by Reps. Joyce Beatty, Sanford Bishop, Susan Bonamici, Troy Carter, Ed Case, Yvette Clarke, Steve Cohen, Debbie Dingell, Dwight Evans, Raúl Grijalva, Jahana Hayes, Chrissy Houlahan, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ted Lieu, Jim McGovern, LaMonica McIver, Seth Moulton, Eleanor Norton-Holmes, Ilhan Omar, Linda Sánchez, Jan Schakowsky, Dina Titus, Jill Tokuda, Nydia Velázquez, and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
The bipartisan resolution included a call on the United States Government to:
- Integrate education in all humanitarian response efforts, both bilateral and multilateral;
- Meet its various commitments to international basic education through its annual budget requests; and for
- The State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development to use all means at its disposal to promote access to quality education, globally, and commit to prioritizing quality and inclusive public education for children and youth – especially girls and those with disabilities – in emergency and crisis settings.
In the light of the suspension of United States aid, including for vital education programmes, the resolution demonstrated the support of members of both parties in Congress for American aid in general and for the vital support it provides to allow children to access education around the world.
With only 5 years remaining to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, global education targets hang in the balance.
This International Day of Education serves as a pivotal moment for parliamentarians to demonstrate their support for efforts to close the gap between the promise of SDG4 and the reality for millions around the world..
To mark the day, IPNEd launched a briefing on the ‘Countdown to 2030’ which outlines actions members of parliament can take in support of education around the world.
