  • International Day of Education 2025 may have passed, but the challenge is ongoing: how do we build education systems that foster critical thinking and foundational skills? Without them, learners risk becoming passive users of AI instead of decision-makers shaping the future. Let’s make education the driver of progress, not the passenger.

CONFEMEN Apprendre Pour Domain Forum: Reflection from group work. Feedback from country participants from ministries across Francophone Africa 🌍: 📚Scale up Associates in Research and Education for Development (ARED) in Senegal 📚Important to intensify communications with communities 📚Collaboration is key - as countries we learned a lot from the Forum. We must draw lessons from Senegal and continue to interact as countries in the Francophone region. 📚Teachers followed the teacher guides (structured peadogy approach) 📚Transfer time between L1 and L2 languages was sufficient to transfer vocabulary, kids feel involved and understand the objectives of the bilingual teaching 📚“Ndaw Wune” is doing extra ordinary work in Senegal in remediation in national languages 📚In many countries there are large class sizes and we saw this model can work in those contexts 📚The facilitation of the class by the teacher and organization of the classroom was well organised. Teachers looked committed and patient 📚The participatory approach and harnessing of the teaching practice stood out. Active participation of students and very motivated 📚Students were able to read in national language and French by the end of G2 - the method of “Ndaw Wune” is performing 📚Mother tongue is important in acquiring the international language 📚The contextualisation of the approach, tools, materials was evident in “Ndaw Wune” 📚Important to promote interaction between teachers and student - cognitive and social interaction 📚These moments of peer learning, knowledge sharing and situation analysis of learning in our countries is key to inspiring change. That we can do it. 📚Using science of teaching - can help us teach learners how to learn and continue to learn. This has been shown to us from Morocco, Senegal and others that explicit pedagogy is helping kids move ahead and not allowing systems to operate at random. Using scientific approaches that will enable our systems to bloom! 📚Political leaders need to express their political will to transform classrooms. It is possible to implement structured pedagogy and remedial approaches that can help students. 📚We saw it’s possible for governmentsto succeed when working with local experts - implementing partners 📚We are investing substantial financial resources in education and we need these resources to deliver results. “Ndaw Wune” and others showed us what’s possible. • "Learning about AI" is as crucial as "learning with AI." Following the International Day of Education 2025, we emphasise the urgent need to integrate digital literacy into African curricula. Teachers must be empowered to use AI tools and teach about AI itself. This dual approach will: - Prepare students for a digital future - Enable broader AI application in development - Drive meaningful technological adoption - Accelerate educational transformation The time is now to ensure that African educators and students are equipped for a world where AI and human agency coexist harmoniously.

  • Technology must serve humanity, not the other way around. But how can it, if our education systems fail to teach ethical reasoning and foundational skills? The ability to think critically, consider ethical dilemmas, and make informed decisions sets humans apart. As we reflect on this Education Week, let’s commit to embedding these lessons into every curriculum. The future depends on it.

  • The International Day of Education 2025 reminds us that critical thinking and problem-solving aren’t just skills but lifelines in an AI-driven world. As we look beyond this day, let’s ensure that education systems globally prioritize teaching these essential skills, enabling learners to thrive as innovators, not just spectators.

  • As we continue to reflect on the International Day of Education 2025, a clear path forward emerges: African governments must prioritise proven, cost-efficient pedagogical approaches. Structured Pedagogy and Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) have effectively improved learning outcomes. When combined with supportive technology and innovation, these approaches can transform education systems at scale. The African Union's End Learning Poverty Campaign and the commitment of 13 countries to end learning poverty by 2035 show growing momentum. Now is the time to create an enabling environment for innovation while staying grounded in what works.
