Supporting Homeowners on Their Retrofit Journey The information available to homeowners on retrofit, insulation and renewables can often be overwhelming, confusing, and overly generic. We know that many people want to take practical action to reduce their home's environmental impact—but getting the right advice, tailored to their property and budget, can be difficult to find. To help bridge this gap, our Director Chris Morgan offers a one-day consultancy service focused on sustainable home upgrades. He also authored the Sustainable Renovation Guide, which has now sold thousands of copies and supports homeowners across the UK to make informed decisions. Alongside this, we’ve been delighted to support local retrofit initiatives across Scotland, including: - Retrofit Strathaven in South Lanarkshire - Loco Home Retrofit in Glasgow - And most recently, Biggar Action on Climate Change (BACC) in South Lanarkshire BACC is a community-led charity helping residents in and around Biggar and Dolphinton reduce carbon emissions. Their initiatives—from bike repair cafes to online recycling directories—empower local people with practical, place-based climate solutions. We’ve recently completed the second tranche of home energy assessments in the Biggar area, delivering 46 bespoke retrofit reports. These surveys—carried out by Chris, Barbara Lantschner, Hugo Target and Drew Carr—provide homeowners with a clear, tailored plan based on their priorities, budget and appetite for DIY improvements. Our hope, shared with BACC, is that this practical, personalised support will give homeowners the confidence to move forward—knowing their decisions are backed by sound building science and expert advice. I'm honoured—and admittedly a little apprehensive—to have been invited to deliver the 157th Annual Lecture for the Glasgow Institute of Architects. It's a genuinely nice thing to have been asked by my fellow architects to talk about some of my recent work with John Gilbert Architects. The GIA is an organisation that means a lot to me having previously been involved in various capacities, including helping Fiona Sinclair to chart 150 years of the organisation's history for that particular anniversary, an awareness of which brings an added layer of responsibility to proceedings. If you're interested, free tickets can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ecFhtsqk I'm off to read Greek Thomson's address to the Institute just to pile the pressure on some more... 🫠

Celebrating the launch of The Tenement Revealed! It was a privilege to take part in the launch of John Gilberts The Tenement Revealed yesterday—a book that sheds new light on Scotland’s most iconic housing type. A fantastic afternoon of discussion on the past, present, and future of tenement living, enriched by the depth of knowledge John’s book brings to this important topic. I was delighted to share the stage with Peter Ranson, Mary Taylor, Annie Flint, and Scott Abercrombie, speaking to a packed house at Historic Environment Scotland. If you’re passionate about Scotland’s built heritage, you can get your copy here: https://lnkd.in/eUUfCi5f A huge thank you to all the speakers, supporters, and attendees who made it such a memorable event!

We’re excited to be featured in this month’s edition of enki magazine. The article shares our story behind the Coldwells Build Passivhaus range, which was inspired by the COP26 Climate Change Summit in Glasgow. After learning about the construction industry’s huge environmental impact, we knew we had to do things differently. Teaming up with leading Passivhaus designers, John Gilbert Architects, we created six ready-to-go, prefabricated homes, all built and certified to the world-leading Passivhaus standard, delivering low heating bills, reduced carbon emissions, minimal maintenance and healthy, comfortable living. Making the Passivhaus standard more accessible and straightforward isn’t just a business goal – it’s our fundamental purpose. Since the range’s launch last November, we’ve had the privilege of meeting so many of you, hearing about your plans and helping you begin the journey toward creating (in enki’s words) “the holy grail” of sustainable, future-ready homes. - #coldwellsbuildpassivhaus #passivhaus #passivehouse #homebuilder #energyefficienthome #sustainablebuilding #prefab #prefabricated #architecture #modernhome
