About us

The diversity of life on Earth—the entire array of plants, animals, and their habitats, collectively known as “biodiversity”—is essential for a healthy planet where all life can thrive, including humans. But the loss of biodiversity is occurring at an alarming rate across the planet. Key Biodiversity Areas, which are among the most incredible and diverse places on Earth for nature, from deserts to the middle of the ocean, are sites of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity. The Key Biodiversity Area Partnership – an ambitious partnership of 13 global conservation organizations – is helping prevent the rapid loss of biodiversity by supporting nationally led efforts to identify these places on the planet that are critical for the survival of unique plants and animals, and the ecological communities they comprise.

🌿 The Gef6 AMP project is currently progressing with the delineation of Madagascar's marine and coastal Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). 🪸Last August, the GEF6-AMP project, implemented by MEDD with technical assistance from WWF Madagascar 🌍🇲🇬 and financially managed by FAPBM, participated in the delineation of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of Northwest and Western Madagascar. 🌿Two regional consultation workshops, held in Majunga and Nosy Be, allowed for further review and validation of the preliminary results of the marine and coastal KBA delineation study. These workshops also defined the boundaries of the KBAs, in particular those of Bombetoka and the Mahavavy-Kinkony Complex, which are among the protected areas supported by FAPBM and are home to rare and endangered species of endemic seabirds in Madagascar. 🍃These consultations were essential to ensure that the data and boundaries were accurate and approved by all stakeholders. Indeed, the collection and analysis of data from these sites has allowed us to monitor the evolution of local species and the quality of life of the communities living in these marine protected areas. 👉These discussions brought together regional managers from Diana and Sofia, DREDD and key stakeholders such as Madagascar National Parks, Wildlife Conservation Society, Conservation International , Blue Ventures and the Fishermen's Federation. 📣 Keep up to date with upcoming initiatives to protect our biodiversity. #Madagascar #AiresProtégées #Biodiversité #ProtectedArea #Biodiversity #SustainableFund #Conservation #fondationPourLaBiodiversité #Sustainableinancing #CommunityledConservation #Nature #Sustainability

    "Co-Financing Guyana's Protected Areas"

Yesterday saw the successful conclusion of the Inaugural National Workshop on Key Biodiversity Areas coordinated by the Protected Areas Trust (Guyana), the Protected Areas Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency. During the four day workshop, participants were exposed to the process of identifying and delineating KBAs, documentation requirements, mapping standards, and other components required for the establishment and management of KBAs. A roadmap was developed to advance the work around KBAs in Guyana, and the participants committed to the formation of a Multi Stakeholder Group. All participants were each presented a Certificate of Participation to mark the completion of the workshop.

Key Biodiversity Area Coordinator @ Re:wild / Freelance Natural History & Conservation Photographer

What a week this has been here in Guyana. I hung up the rubber boots and snake hook for this trip and instead, with colleagues from BirdLife International, provided training on Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). Over four days, we trained agencies, organizations, and stakeholders who are vital to the conservation of Guyana’s biodiversity on all aspects of KBAs, their importance, and the approach to identify them. From this workshop, a road map was developed to advance this work across the country. This was all made possible through collaboration with the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), Protected Areas Trust (Guyana), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). I’m incredibly grateful to everyone in Guyana who played a key role in making this happen and I’m very excited to continue to support this work into the future. Re:wild

🐘 Botswana’s famed Okavango Delta — one of the seven natural wonders of the world — relies completely on rivers flowing through Angola and Namibia, eventually emptying into northern Botswana. The Okavango Delta is also a Key Biodiversity Area (#KBAs) and is considered a site of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the global persistence of biodiversity. 💧 An average of 2.5 trillion gallons of water flow through the Okavango watershed every year, making it a lifeline for roughly one million people living in an arid region. The Okavango River Basin is at risk from ReconAfrica, a Canadian oil and gas company. Join Re:wild and help support communities in Botswana and Namibia who are fighting to protect this incredible KBA from oil drilling. ➡️ Take action and tell Minister Pohamba Shifeta to stop delaying a ruling and #SaveTheOkavango: https://lnkd.in/gWPRdmA2 📸: Chris Anastasopoulos Via Re:wild

The workshop is being facilitated by world renowned conservationist and photographer Andrew Snyder of re:Wild and Cecilia Tobar and Gabriela Toscano of Bird Life International. KBAs have global value for conservation due to their outstanding ecological integrity, and are globally important ecosystems with significant populations of animals, fungi, and plants. The IUCN notes that these sites have proven to be a tool for guiding decisions on conservation and sustainable management. During the opening of the workshop, Executive Director of PAT Guyana, Oleta Williams noted that a large part of PAT's mandate is to mobilize resources to support activities like these. She also thanked the contributing donors the French Agency for Development (AFD), and the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) through the Caribbean Regional Architecture for Biodiversity (CRAB) Project. The CRAB Project is being implemented by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), which PAT (Guyana) signed a partnership agreement with in 2022. A recent court ruling has temporarily halted agricultural plans, giving hope for restoring Lake Marmara, one of Turkey's #KBAs 💧🦩 The lake is one of the three most important wetlands of the Aegean Region. It once was home to Dalmatian Pelicans, dozens of waterbirds, and endemic fish species. However, in the last 10 years, the lake has lost 98% of its surface area because the state authorities unlawfully converted this area into agricultural land after constructing a dam to block its water source. Hope for Lake Marmara, Türkiye! 🍀 A recent court ruling has temporarily halted harmful agricultural plans, giving hope for the restoration of Lake Marmara, one of Turkey's Key Biodiversity Areas. 💧🦩 The lake is one of the three most important wetlands of the Aegean Region. It once was home to Dalmatian Pelicans, dozens of waterbirds, and endemic fish species. However, in the last 10 years, the lake has lost 98% of its surface area because the state authorities unlawfully converted the area into agricultural land after constructing a dam to block its water source. In response, Doğa Derneği/BirdLife Türkiye, along with 25 partner organizations, took legal action to protect the lake. The court's expert opinion has now confirmed that with the right measures, Lake Marmara can regain its wetland characteristics. This court decision is a significant step forward, and we remain hopeful for a favorable final judgment that will help restore this vital ecosystem. 🌍 📷 Ismael Memis
