𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲❓ It is our goal at TNFD to make our recommendations applicable to as many market participants as possible. The TNFD recommendations have been designed to be relevant across jurisdictions and the different approaches to materiality in use. ◼️ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 We recommend that all organisations start their assessment by considering their dependencies and impacts on nature; understanding dependencies and impacts is fundamental to understanding nature-related risks and opportunities. The report preparer can then apply their approach to materiality to the results of this analysis according to their preferences, regulatory requirements and the needs of intended report users. ◼️𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 In our assessment approach (LEAP), report preparers can assess their dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities with both: 🔵an impact materiality assessment at the end of the Evaluate phase, aligned with GRI Standards and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and 🔴 a financial materiality assessment at the end of the Assess phase, aligned with the approach of the ISSB and CSRD. ◼️𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 We recommend that report preparers use ISSB’s definition of material information as a baseline. ◼️𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 The TNFD also provides for organisation to additionally apply an impact materiality definition, for example, using the GRI Standards or the ESRS. ◼️𝐀 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 Our flexible approach thereby accommodates the use of a single materiality approach such as the approach of the ISSB S1 General Requirements. And a double materiality approach such as that outlined in the European Union’s ESRS. To read more about our approach to materiality, we recommend downloading the Recommendations of the TNFD and our Guidance on the LEAP Approach: 🔽TNFD recommendations - https://ow.ly/3kpC50TaBQ0 🔽TNFD LEAP Approach - https://ow.ly/3kpC50TaBQ0 #TNFD #Materiality #NatureDisclosures #LEAP

  • 📣 With over 80% of European habitats in poor condition, the EU has put the Nature Restoration Law into force. IBAT will help propel it forward! This historic law is a mandate for member states to restore 20% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 and other ecosystems requiring restoration by 2050. It is a crucial instrument in helping the EU and its Member States meet the commitments made under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. ➡ IBAT's datasets will facilitate this progress. The STAR metric can prioritise sites where restoration activities are most likely to yield positive outcomes for species and habitats. Learn more about how IBAT and STAR can assist governments and the private sector in planning and implementing the Nature Restoration Law and National Restoration plans: https://lnkd.in/eGeeb7sD #restorenature #natureconservation #biodiversity

Today, the Nature Restoration Law enters into force and we're here for it! 🤩 It’s a truly historic moment as the law sets legally-binding targets for Member States to restore 20% of land areas and 20% of seas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. This day follows years of advocacy and campaigning from the #RestoreNature movement to get the Nature Restoration Law across the finish line. 📽️ Watch our video recap of the campaign and let’s work together next to restore our rivers, forests, seas, wetlands & green our cities all around Europe 🦋

  • The European Union has achieved a remarkable milestone. In the first half of 2024, wind and solar power generation surpassed fossil fuels - marking a nearly twofold increase since 2016! Meanwhile, countries like India and China are ramping up investments in renewable energy, demonstrating a global commitment to a sustainable energy future. However, as we transition to renewable energy, we must consider the impact on biodiversity. Poorly sited infrastructure has severe consequences: 🦅 Direct effects on wildlife such as birds and bats   🌳 Indirect effects such as habitat disruption Sensitivity mapping shows it is possible to deploy renewable energy at scale while protecting our most vulnerable species. • Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) represent some of the most crucial sites for species and habitats worldwide 🗺 🌳 🐟 🦍 . Recognised as high biodiversity value areas, KBAs are integral to key regulations and standards like the IFC - International Finance Corporation Performance Standard 6, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). More organizations are now incorporating KBAs into their no-go policies to minimize biodiversity impacts. Financial institutions are also referencing KBAs to guide their investments, steering clear of the world’s most fragile ecosystems. Governments are using KBAs for spatial and conservation planning, helping to reduce biodiversity loss and identify new protected areas. Major updates to the KBA dataset—including assessments of 719 KBAs in the Tropical Andes and Congo Basin, and the identification of 263 terrestrial sites in South Africa—are significant strides forward for conservation. On IBAT, these datasets are regularly updated, giving users access to the latest information from the WDPA, WDKBA, and IUCN Red List. This ensures more informed decision-making that accounts for biodiversity and nature. Great work to the KBA Secretariat and National Coordination Groups for their tremendous efforts in making this happen! 🎉 #kba #biodiversity #nature
