We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2024, taking place this week from 9 -15 September. This year's theme is Every Check Counts. Kirklees Council’s Health and Safety Team will be working with local commercial catering businesses to make sure their staff and customers are not at risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure. CO is a highly poisonous gas that can kill quickly and without warning, as you cannot see it, taste it, or smell it. The team will advise on correct safety devices, safe appliance installation, adequate ventilation systems and regular maintenance is in place. The top 5 things businesses should check to be gas safe: 1. Check for warning signs that could indicate gas appliances are not working correctly. Signs may include lazy yellow/orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out, too much condensation in the room, or error messages on the appliance’s control panel. 2. Check you know the six main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately and call the national gas emergency helpline. 3. Check your audible carbon monoxide alarm is marked EN50291 and displays the British Standards Kitemark. 4. Check that you have had an annual gas safety inspection. Gas appliances should be inspected once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. 5. Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered and qualified for the work that needs doing. We are creeping closer to completion as we share the latest update on our dementia day care facilities at Knowl Park House. Contractors have been busy with internal and external works and things are really beginning to take shape for our elderly residents living with dementia. This will be a key facility that enables them to be as independent as possible whilst providing much needed respite for their carers. **Kirklees Council statement on unity and tolerance** Kirklees is a place with a strong and proud tradition of unity and tolerance. We know that communities across our region will remain true to these values and not allow those who wish to sow division, to undermine our unity or our welcome to those who seek sanctuary with us. We absolutely condemn the violence, intolerance, islamophobia and racism that has been displayed by a small minority recently and recognise the importance of fairness and equality in combatting these messages of hatred. It is clear that recent events have been frightening and unsettling and we would like to reassure residents, staff and businesses that we have, and will continue to actively play our part, working along with our dedicated police service and others to avoid misinformation and ensure ongoing safety of our communities. We wish to extend our gratitude to those who have worked to keep others safe through this difficult time and to redouble our commitment to ensuring another 50 years of Kirklees celebrating our strength in diversity, our shared unity and commitment to peace. Cllr Carole Pattison, Leader of Kirklees Council Cllr Nosheen Dad, Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council Steve Mawson, Chief Executive of Kirklees Council
