Congratulations to our Public Health team on being shortlisted as a finalist for an MJ Award in Innovation for Reducing Health Inequalities! This nomination recognises the collaborative efforts of Public Health, Children's Services, Education, and Homerton Maternity Services on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Their work has focused on reviewing the local landscape against national quality standards, raising awareness of prenatal alcohol exposure, training providers across health, education, and social services to identify and assess cases, and refining protocols to reduce inequalities in diagnosis and support. A special shoutout to Andrew Trathen and Drew Hawkinson for driving this vital work forward.

About us
Hackney is one of the UK’s highest performing local authorities, serving one of London’s best places to live and work. Hackney has a history of overcoming challenges; we went from being the worst local authority in the country to one of the best over the past 15 years. We have effectively managed the second highest level of cuts in the country whilst prioritising services, focusing on residents, and keeping standards high to make Hackney fairer, safer and more sustainable. Our staff are what makes Hackney Council great and we thrive on challenge and change. Our mission is to make Hackney a place for everyone, where all our residents, whatever their background, have a chance to lead healthy and successful lives; a place of which everyone can be proud, with excellent services, thriving businesses, and outstanding public spaces; a place where everyone feels valued and can make their voice heard. In Hackney we are: Open; Inclusive; Ambitious; Pioneering; Proactive and Proud… of Hackney, of each other, of what we do, and of the Council.

“An inclusive, exciting and ambitious council, committed to delivering for its residents.” Last autumn a team of senior officers and councillors from other UK councils spent four days in Hackney as part of an LGA Corporate Peer Challenge, meeting over 100 councillors, staff, partners and residents. Their report has now been published, and it shows that Hackney Council is a strong, high-performing council, praising our understanding of communities in the borough, our ambitions for addressing inequality, and the positive outcomes we have delivered for residents. But it also highlighted that we can do more to build on our strengths and address the challenges we face. We now have an action plan in place setting out how we will act on these recommendations and continue our journey of success over the last two decades.
