Should we continue to build new buildings or focus on renewing the ones we already have? That was the question the global construction community gathered to answer at the 2024 Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) in September. Our MD Jo Sutherland was in attendance, where she learned of the need to preserve heritage while improving the sustainability of existing infrastructure, and innovative projects underway across the globe. She heard from experts including Michael George of JLL; BVN Architecture principals Catherine Skinner and Matthew Blair; Dana Robbins Schneider of Empire State Realty Trust and Ian Booth of Buro Happold; Ashley Rogow of Gensler; Daniel Kaplan of FXCollaborative ; and Fuquan Collins, vice president and chief diversity officer at Turner Construction Company. She also learned about volumetric construction from Ronan Farrell, head of design at Tide, along with various UK projects that have brought buildings back to life from the likes of WILL+Partners and Broadway Malyan; Fletcher Priest Architects; John Bushell of KPF; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)’s Sukriye (Rae) Robinson; and Daniel Pitkin from GPE.
