Finding Purpose: An Extract From The New Standard Magazine Purpose. It’s a word thrown around boardrooms, social media posts and transient marketing campaigns. But what does it actually mean, and how do you align it within your brand authentically for positive change? In an exclusive extract from our inaugural The New Standard Magazine, we invited leaders from five forward-thinking organisations, including a natural skincare brand and a think-tank on the future of the home, to put their heads together over lunch and discuss the role that purpose plays in their different fields of work. They shared their personal insights on how purpose is not just a buzzword, but a compass to design with intention and build trust and connection in today’s world. Featuring: Jessica Gregory, Head of Design at Haeckels; Helen Job, Former Head of Research at SPACE10 (The Design Lab supported by IKEA); Jason Holley, Principal at Universal; John Wilson, CEO of Map Project Office and Universal; Nick Marshall, Senior Partner at Made Thought. In May, we partnered with Dezeen and our sister studio, Map Project Office, on North American Design 2024 — a series highlighting and celebrating emerging and well-established creative individuals and brands across the continent. As the series comes to an end, we've selected 10 stand-out independent designers, each from a different city across North America. This initiative provides a platform for us to engage with diverse talent and understand the unique design cultures across the continent. Our creative director, Satoshi Isono, explains, "The series is a great platform for us to engage with this talent and gain a better understanding of the design culture in this part of the world." We were particularly drawn to designers who emphasise locality through the use of local materials, processes, and community-oriented approaches, reflecting a strong connection to their distinct local cultures and addressing sustainability and waste. What Should a Product Sound Like? Sound design plays a crucial role in music, film, and media, but its impact on product design and architecture has often been overlooked. With devices becoming central to our daily lives, how can we tailor the sounds they emit to enhance our daily experiences and integrate more seamlessly into our environments? In the latest instalment of our podcast series "Where Next? Conversations with Map Project Office", host Oli Stratford of Disegno Publications is joined by Freddie Denham Webb, Co-founder of father, Dr Emily Candela, Senior Research Tutor at Royal College of Art, Joseph Henry, Co-Founder of Sound Advice, and Chloe Glews, Director of Creative Strategy at Map & Universal Design Studio. Together they explore the role of sound design in shaping products, spaces, and experiences, discussing how sound can be crafted to improve our interactions with the world around us. Tune into the conversation to hear their insights: https://lnkd.in/g7GbghJJ

The IBM T.J. Watson Research Center was named a finalist in Fast Company's 2024 Innovation by Design Awards for Interior Design and received an honourable mention in the Experimental Design category. Located in Yorktown Heights, New York, IBM Research's global headquarters is the largest industrial research organisation in the world, home to over 1,500 scientists, engineers, and designers dedicated to advancing the future of computing. We are proud to have collaborated with IBM and Universal Design Studio on the design of the interior space, furniture and hardware of Think Lab, including IBM Quantum System Two and the Artificial Intelligence Unit. Think Lab was created to facilitate deeper discussions, enable small group exchanges, and host hands-on technology demonstrations, showcasing IBM's latest advancements in computing. Congratulations to IBM for the well-deserved recognition. We are happy to see our project, Smart Aid Kit, awarded a Winner of Fast Company's 2024 Innovation by Design Awards: https://lnkd.in/gWVWN9Cc “It started as a way to design a vision that could help in democratising healthcare,“ says Map Creative Director Emilie Robinson. “It’s a set of tools that could allow you to conduct basic triage without having to necessarily go to a doctor or a hospital, which, obviously, a lot of people can’t get access to for various reasons.” According to the World Health Organization and The World Bank, over 4.5 billion people lack access to basic healthcare. Developed in collaboration with Modem, the AI-powered first aid kit features four conceptual medical devices designed to address this critical issue. Whilst it remains a speculative project, we built the physical tools as part of our design process, making the concept as tangible as possible and further deepening our understanding of its potential use. Having won the experimental category in this year's Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards, this project underscores the power of thoughtful design and technology in tackling global challenges. Thank you Fast Company for this recognition, and congratulations to the teams at Map and Modem for their collaborative achievement. Explore the Smart Aid Kit: https://lnkd.in/e-YRDN65
