With a heat wave hitting parts of the UK, sunburn is rife, with those aiming to soak up those precious but potentially deadly UV rays! Our CEO, Michelle Baker☀️ will be talking to BBC Radio Cornwall Breakfast Show this morning at 7:35 to discuss Ross Ellis, who is married with two children, and has recently lost his eye following a melanoma diagnosis. Ellis said he believed his cancer was caused by one severe case of sunburn in his teens. We will be talking about a safe way of enjoying the Sun this summer so tune in… https://lnkd.in/eKNeCEpG

Raising awareness of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer via four campaigns, focused in sport & outdoor recreation
About us
The Melanoma Fund delivers national, public health campaigns, targeting all in sport and outdoor recreation. Skin cancer rates have soared by 70% in the last 10 years and this is simply not acceptable to us. We work to: • Raise awareness of the risks • Improve sun protection habits • Increase early detection rates • Lower incidence of all types of skin cancer Our campaigns are supported by hundreds of major organisations that work with us to help educate their members and customers. Many underestimate the importance of sun protection, even if they understand the risks, and this is something we aim to impact. Our campaigns are widely supported by major organisations and include: The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code; designed to improve the provision of sun protection and early years habits to all primary aged children attending organised outdoor activity. Watch Your Back! - a sun protection campaign for gardeners to ensure that everyone who loves the outdoors are aware of the importance of sun protection and checking their skin. The Slip! Slap! Swing! sun protection campaign for all those who play or work in golf. Our mission is to get all clubs Sun Protection Accredited, raising awareness and cutting incidences of skin cancer in the sport.

Keen to see the warmer weather come back (and stay)? Rest assured: you're not alone! But as temperatures (hopefully) rise, it’s vital to know how to support your participants to stay safe outdoors, including by taking measures to protect them against heat and sun. Find out how in the new ‘Sunguarding’ section of our guide, which we developed with Melanoma Fund ⬇️ https://bit.ly/4ePclBQ

I am delighted to announce yet another collaboration for the Melanoma Fund. Following discussions with Matt Dando-Thompson Criced Cymru / Cricket Wales now features the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) guidance document we created with the national governing body, around sun protection for cricket coaches, PLUS our Sunguarding course link onto the pathway section of their website. This may seem like a small step, however this is another brick removed from the wall blocking awareness of Sunguarding in sport. Another brick which could represent a life saved from melanoma. Thank you Matt. #melanomaawareness #sunprotectioninsport #Sunguarding #skincancerawareness https://lnkd.in/daRrs6-Y

Proud of this support from Welsh Sports Association which represents a step towards securing a generation versed in Sunguarding, eradicating melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. With high rates of skin cancer in Wales this collaboration can only do good both in terms of awareness and education.
Sunguarding is vital to all who enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle, so we're collaborating with the Melanoma Fund to raise awareness of the dangers of the sun. It's vital that those who work with others outdoors are educated around how to effectively provide adequate sun protection throughout the summer. The sport and leisure sector must be aware and vigilant of the risk of skin cancer. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e8-7Mh3D Sport Wales Michelle Baker☀️

If you work for an outdoor organisation, what does your sun protection strategy look like? With sunburn fast becoming an unacceptable outcome of organised outdoor activity, it is vital that NGBs protect the reputation, and support education of their affiliated outdoor leaders. I am proud to say that the Melanoma Fund has teamed with Paddle UK to do just that. #Sunguardingsport For further details click the link: https://lnkd.in/dZwHatCN

We have over 100 national governing bodies of sport officially backing our campaigns. We now need more proactive commitment from these organisations and funding from Sport England Sport Ireland Sport Wales and sportscotland to create discernible impact. Sunburn is NOT an acceptable outcome of physical activity and as such, we need to protect those participating and the reputation and integrity of those leading via education as non action can and WILL turn into neglect claims. We can do this. Let’s not let skin cancer continue to win. Melanoma Fund #Melanomaawareness #Melanoma #Skincancerawareness #Sports
Don't let the sun turn your sport into a silent killer. #GoodAdsMatter Earlier this year, Melanoma Fund kicked off an eye-opening campaign just in time for the summer sports season. Titled “Silhouettes”, this powerful initiative vividly illustrates how unprotected moles can morph into deadly melanomas. By shaping these melanomas to mirror the outline of various sports and placing them on parts of the body where melanoma is typically found, the campaign brought a fresh perspective to sun safety. The message was clear: neglecting sun protection while enjoying outdoor sports can be fatal. Despite being nearly 100% curable at stage one, melanoma is one of the deadliest cancers, claiming over 2,300 lives annually in the UK alone. Accompanied by the commanding message, “check and protect your skin from melanoma this summer,” and striking visual images, the campaign hammered home the critical need for sun safety. “I really enjoyed the course, it helped remind me of my responsibilities and to be explicit in my role modeling as a coach. I learned several new things to apply in my outdoor sessions and found the UV index a great help. I am more sun aware and as a result, so are my players”. Chris Chapman Learning Experience Manager, UK Coaching Sunburn is no longer an acceptable outcome of any organised outdoor activity, and rightly so. If you run outdoor sessions, you must protect those in your care and yourself. Find out why over 1,000 learners have taken the Melanoma Fund's FREE course, and why Sunguarding is rapidly becoming THE buzzword in sports. #sportscoaching #sportscoaches #outdooractivitiesforkids #outdooractivity #outdoorsports #educationmatters #skincancerawareness #melanomaawareness https://lnkd.in/e5QmkTZk
