📌 Important Notice We are really sad to announce that our time in Lewisham Shopping Centre will come to an end on Sunday 30 March 2025. In the past four years, we have had a fantastic run, building lasting friendships and connections - and we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. We are immensely grateful to Landsec for making it possible for us to host our museum in such a brilliant venue in the heart of this incredible community. And to every single person who has visited, contributed and supported the museum over the past four years. ♥️ Don't worry, you still have time to come and visit us before we close our doors! We're planning some special free events and activities during our final few months in the space – we'll be announcing soon. And this isn't goodbye – we are currently exploring a range of different temporary venue options for the period leading up to us opening at our permanent home in the City of London in 2027. We will share news on this with you as soon as we have it. We hope you'll join us on this journey. For now, don't miss your chance to visit us in Lewisham during our final months here! #Lewisham 📸 Elzbieta Piekacz

Exploring how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are.
About us
The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. Migration is a pressing contemporary issue and is at the centre of polarised political and online debate. But there’s an underlying story of comings and goings stretching back many centuries. And this story goes to the heart of who we are today. Britain has thousands of museums, but none comprehensively focused on this important theme that connects us all. After a 10 year journey we now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a permanent Migration Museum for the UK. Due for completion in 2027, the Migration Museum will be situated on the first three floors of a new block of student accommodation close to the Tower of London. The Migration Museum in London will lie at the heart of a much wider national ecosystem with pop-ups in shopping centres and high streets across the UK. What we do: ⚡ Stage engaging exhibitions and dynamic events 💡 Deliver an inspiring education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners. 🤝 Work with our Migration Network to inspire people working in cultural institutions across the UK to shed new light on how migration has shaped our communities. How you can help: We are seeking ambitious funders and trailblazing corporate partners who share our passion for this project. Whether your organisation might want to contribute behind the scenes, or name a space in the museum, we warmly welcome all kinds and levels of support.

🏆 We won the Digital Culture Network Award! This award is in recognition of the Migration Museum’s innovative approach to retail and a testament to the incredible work of our Retail Manager, Katy Clinch. With support from Arts Council England's Digital Culture Network , Katy led a transformation of our online shop’s sales and promotion strategy, using Meta advertising to increase in online sales with a whopping 387% week on week! Katy F., Tech Champion for Paid Social Media at DCN said: "I've been delighted to support Katy with her work on the Migration Museum's paid social media over the last year. They're a small team, but Katy is always really open to trying new things and has made a huge amount of progress - as reflected in their fantastic results. We've been progressing this work and continue to see impressive impact, demonstrating Katy's commitment to implementing a successful paid social media strategy." The #MigrantMakersMarket, created by Lewisham-based designer Lucy Sanderson, is now a three-time award-winning shop, shining a light on migrant makers and their incredible craftsmanship. This success wouldn’t be possible without them, or the amazing support of our community. We're an ambitious bunch at the Migration Museum - always looking for new ways to grow whether it’s through creative collaborations or retail innovation. As ever - it involves a great team effort to translate that ambition into reality. A huge thank you to Digital Culture Network and Arts Council England for their support, and you can spot Katy with colleagues Daniela Zaharieva, Harriet Costello and Frances Ewings holding the award. Thank you also to Sopo Ramischwili for her beautiful product photos. 📍 Our award-winning Migrant Makers Market is open in person until 30 March, and of course, do check out our online shop (link in comments). #DigitalCultureAwards #RetailInnovation #SustainingCulture #SocialCommerce

A throwback to our first days in Lewisham Shopping Centre back in 2020. Did you come to any of our early exhibitions? Maybe you got a chocolate on our first day of opening (also happened to be Valentines day)!
This photo is from five years ago, when we opened our doors in Lewisham. It was February 2020, so we had to close them very shortly afterwards (!) but my goodness... it's been a location that has surpassed all our expectations. We opened with our 'Room to Breathe' exhibition (an immersive tour of stories of generations of new arrivals to Britain, transported from our former home in an old fire station in Vauxhall), an installation of Humanae by the incredible Angélica Dass, and the two giant chunks of the Berlin Wall you can see in the picture, courtesy of street artists STIK and Thierry Noir. Later in the year, under the direction of the ever inspiring Aditi Anand, the team transformed this former H&M unit into an incredible airport departure lounge for 'Departures', our first major new exhibition in Lewisham. Many of you might remember it. Focusing on emigration (the lesser-talked about flip-side of immigration) the space was almost unrecognisable, bar perhaps the ingenious use of changing rooms as listening booths. Since then we've gone on to stage many more exhibitions, including: 🏪 - Taking Care of Business - focusing on the fundamental role of migrant entrepreneurs in the making of Britain 💙 - Heart of the Nation - an extension of an online exhibition we created during the pandemic, shining a light on the stories and experiences of people who have come to Britain to work in the NHS 🌍 - All Our Stories - bringing together the most impactful exhibits from previous exhibitions. And we've hosted so many brilliant events, from all-day festivals focused on topics ranging from Windrush 75 to family history, comedy nights, woodworking masterclasses, fermentation workshops, book launches, panel discussions... and more. We've loved being a museum in a shopping centre. It's been very special to be welcomed into and a part of such an amazing community. It's opened up huge opportunities for us including, of course, the chance to build a permanent home with partners Dominus and move towards our vision of a society that owns and feels connected to our shared migration story as an essential part of British history. We've also: - Developed friendships, collaborations and partnerships that we hope to continue far into the future. - Welcomed more than 60,000 people per year who are much more ethnically and socio-economically diverse than the average for London Museums. - Brought more than 30,000 visitors per year into Lewisham from outside the borough - Worked with more than 5,000 pupils each year And much more besides. I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have supported us along the way. And I hope that you'll come with us on the next stage of our journey. 🤔 How do we get young people to engage with the realities of migration, justice, and human stories? At the Migration Museum, we believe in making history felt—not just learned. Our Learning & Volunteer Coordinator, Cym, works with school groups, students, and volunteers to spark deep conversations about migration, justice, and human connection through interactive exhibits like Pieced by artist Becky Dee Trevenen. This artwork tells the stories of women—some as young as 17—who were sentenced to years of hard labor and transported to Tasmania for crimes as small as stealing linen. Through hands-on interaction, students engage with these women’s histories, seeing them as individuals rather than just names in textbooks. For Cym, this is what makes the Migration Museum so special: the ability to take complex, often difficult topics and turn them into conversations that challenge perspectives, build empathy, and connect the past to the present. Watch the video to hear from Cym about why Pieced is one of his favourite pieces in our current exhibition All Our Stories: Migration and the Making of Britain— and why these stories still matter today. #MigrationStories #Education #Justice #HistoryInAction #MuseumsMatter

It's great to be able to share some of the insights from our community engagement programme with others in the sector. From the creation of our People's Panel in 2023 to working with our Community Curators and so many talented local artists over the last year... Mona has loads of experiences, highlights and learnings to tell you about. Let us know if you're planning on attending.

If there are any other friendly academics who want to look like legends in front of their teenage children, we are happy to oblige... 😊
Lovely three day family break in London, even if it's always a bit of a busman's holiday with me - visiting St Paul's Cathedral and the Migration Museum. It was great to finally see the Migration Museum in Lewisham Shopping Centre before it moves to its new home, and lovely to chat with museum staff members Alice and Lucy. I look forward to staying in touch about our various projects. My teenagers - usually rather resigned to (although thankfully not bored by) me dragging them round museums on holiday - were utterly amazed when Alice (who I'd met at a conference in Berlin in the autumn) recognised me as we came in. I doubt it'll ever happen again, but what a way to make an impression on two teens who suddenly saw their mum in a different light (thank you Alice!)!!

The Mayor of London (Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan) has launched Loved and Wanted—a campaign celebrating the message that everyone, no matter their background or journey, is valued and belongs in London. And we couldn’t agree more! ❤️ At the Migration Museum, we explore how people from all over the world, across generations, have shaped who we are—both as individuals and as a nation. This is from our latest exhibition All Our Stories: "I remember, when I first came to London, walking around and seeing people from all walks of life, and I felt immediately welcome and I felt that, at last, I could be myself. This was such an important part of starting my life here." –Pasquale Growing up in a very religious part of Italy, being a gay man was isolating—Pasquale felt like there was no space for him. But in London, he found a home. He works as a gardener at Hackney City Farm, where he’s built a strong community and a sense of belonging. 📸 Keymea Yazdanian, 2017 Visit our All Our Stories exhibition at the Migration Museum to discover stories of migration, from London and beyond—closing 30 March. ✨ #LovedAndWanted 📸 Mayor of London Sadiq Khan visiting the Migration Museum in 2022 when Lewisham was London's Borough of Culture. Thanks also to Debbie Weekes-Bernard, Justine Simons OBE and Kirsten Dunne for their ongoing support.
