Nuclear Electric Power Generation

Safe. Economical. Clean Energy.
About us
Moltex Energy is developing a next generation nuclear reactor that can produce clean electricity at a lower cost than fossil fuels. The technology is based on molten salt fuel in conventional fuel assemblies. Existing stockpiles of spent nuclear fuel can be used as the fuel source and the electricity produced is entirely flexible. Nuclear can now be considered as a peaking plant, not only baseload. Moltex has activities in the UK, Canada and the USA.

We are fortunate that Canadian Nuclear Laboratories are supporting us in the development of our Waste to Stable Salt (WATSS) process. CNL’s expertise will be vital in validating the research we are doing in Canada and in our laboratory in Warrington, UK to create WATSS – which will be used to convert spent #nuclear fuel. We were delighted to welcome a team of CNL scientists to Warrington recently to observe our own researchers and technicians in action and work alongside them. Our huge thanks to the team for visiting, and to CNL for their continuing support in making our #technology a reality. #energy #nuclearenergy #netzero #climateaction

It's always good for us to talk about the research we're doing - check out the links in Rory's post to access the presentation slides and full research paper!
It was a huge pleasure and privilege to address the G4SR-5 conference on Friday and present the latest research on the capabilities of our SSR-W wasteburner reactor. It confirms what we’ve known from the start – that our advanced #nuclear technology has ‘best in class’ performance when it comes to disposing of long-lived transuranic elements while creating low-cost, low-carbon #energy. We think it's a big deal and so we're grateful that many of the news outlets are covering it including World Nuclear News where it is the most read article. https://lnkd.in/gA9zRHze If you want to do a light dive, check out the slide deck https://lnkd.in/gxg2vF_y, for all my fellow nerds out there who want to do a deep dive, here is the full paper https://lnkd.in/gvZYH7AC . My huge thanks to the organising committee at the Canadian Nuclear Society for a superb event and for giving Moltex the opportunity to take part. #nuclearenergy #climate #climateaction

Our colleagues at MoltexFLEX are making great strides in working with the UK regulatory bodies and informing them about the FLEX reactor!
#Safety-case informed design is vital to cost-effectively developing a low-cost, rapid-deployment advanced #nuclear plant – and that needs early regulatory engagement. We’re delighted that after industry discussion with Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the regulators across the past year, Office for Nuclear Regulation and Environment Agency introduced early engagement to open a dialogue with SMR vendors. We kicked off our early engagement with ONR and EA in September, with a hugely productive discussion on how our FLEX reactor will meet the principles of the UK’s world-renowned regulatory process. FLEX is built on passive safety – air cooled, walk-away safe, with passive reactivity control – and it was a pleasure to start discussing this with the regulators. #energy #nuclearenergy #climate #climateaction #netzero

As Canada continues to move toward a net-zero future, many forms of clean energy, including nuclear energy, are needed to power the growing demand for affordable and reliable electricity. Today, we announced $13.6 million in funding from our Enabling Small Modular Reactors (#SMR) Program for nine research projects to help support the deployment of SMRs, which will contribute to our low-carbon economy and help fight climate change. Research on our molten salt coolant is really heating up! It’s a pleasure to be working with Argonne National Laboratory to help develop the technology for our Wasteburner reactor. We will be publishing results from other avenues of our research in the coming months – watch this space! #nuclear #energy #nuclearenergy #cleanenergy #climateaction
It was great to visit Argonne National Laboratory recently to see the progress that’s been made in creating a molten salt loop for testing and validation of our coolant salt! It’s one of the largest chloride salt loops in the world – we’ll be using it to model how fuel assemblies in the Moltex Energy SSR-W reactor will function under different operating and accident conditions, as well as gathering data on heat transfer, corrosion and the salt’s behaviour. Huge thanks to the team there, carrying out the amazing research with us at ANL. #nuclear #energy #nuclearenergy #cleanenergy #research

I am a huge proponent of Energy Return on Energy Invested (EROI or eROI) as the ultimate metric of environmental and economic sustainability. First, eROI is not the same as "return on investment", which is a ratio of net revenues ($) to the total invested ($). eROI is the ratio of total energy (Joules) produced by a conversion unit over its entire lifespan divided by the entire life cycle energy (Joules) required to build said unit. Thus, an eROI of 10 to 1 implies that a conversion unit produced 10x more energy over its lifespan than was consumed in its creation and commissioning. Here in this plot, eROI is estimated for each technology class as a function having sufficient storage such that it is fully dispatchable in response to variable demand. When eROI decreases "with storage", this implies that much larger amounts of energy is required to build-in that dispatchable design feature. Conversely, if eROI does not decrease "with storage", this means that the unit already was already inherently dispatchable. The 10x difference in eROI between Gen III Nuclear and Gen IV Nuclear is simply a function of the burn-up rate (i.e., GWh per tonne) of the reactors used. An example would be the burn-up rate of a 1970s built Canadian CANDU reactor of 180 to 200 GWh per tonne, versus an emerging molten salt technology like Moltex Energy's SSR-W waste burner reactor, which claims a burn-up rate of 4,800 GWh per tonne. That is a factor of 20x larger eROI for the latter unit. Finally, eROI is the ultimate environmental metric, as it encapsulates all energy requirements to extract, refine, manufacture and construct a conversion unit. The lower this value, the higher the environmental disturbance. Those wishing to do a deeper dive into the fundamentals of eROI, this pre-print paper is a great place to start: https://lnkd.in/gaatVZem
