Good jobs and climate action are two big benefits of accelerating the clean energy transition in the UK. We commissioned Global Counsel to look at what steps could help speed up the decarbonisation of the GB electricity system. It suggests there is an opportunity for the UK to realise significant benefits at home and show international leadership. "Delivery of the 2030 Mission would mean the UK has the most carbon free electricity in the G7. "Critically the 2030 Mission is an opportunity to boost supply chains in the UK and secure economic and industrial benefits. "It can make the UK a world leader in floating offshore wind, an exporter of hydrogen and CCUS capabilities globally and a beneficiary of inward investment from new suppliers." Clean Energy = Good Jobs. Good to see our graduates talking about the positive difference they are making today and for future generations.
Earlier this week, Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband met with representatives from various trade unions to explore plans for our new Office for Clean Energy Jobs within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Establishing the Office for Clean Energy Jobs is part of the government’s plan to reach clean energy by 2030 and highlight the substantial jobs opportunities from this transition - getting more people working in clean energy and green sectors, helping us to achieve our net zero ambitions, boost the UK’s energy independence and unlocking investment and growth 👷♂️ 📈

We welcome the news that the UK government will increase the AR6 Contracts for Difference budget. This will set a benchmark for future auction rounds which will be critical to hitting #netzero targets. Paul Cooley, our Director for Offshore Wind, said: “Today’s news is a very welcome signal; looking ahead it will also be vital that the parameters set in the next two auction rounds – AR7 and AR8 – encourage unprecedented investment and additional capacity across a range of renewable technologies. “It is also important to ensure the end-to-end process of developing these mission-critical projects is accelerated. A good first step would be a quick decision to consent Berwick Bank, which at 4.1GW, is one of the most significant offshore wind developments in the world.”

Net zero – are we moving fast enough? Recently we were joined on the #CleanEnergyPod by Michael Grubb, Professor of Energy and Climate Change at UCL (University College London). Michael has contributed to the UK's Climate Change Committee, as well as the UN's IPCC and a whole host of other initiatives, making him the right person to join us and discuss climate change, the energy industry and what needs to happen in the next few years to speed up the clean energy transition. You can hear from Michael by listening to the Clean Energy Pod, available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube via the link in the comments below ⬇️

"It's good news...I hope it unlocks other technologies like floating, hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, some of the things we haven't been able to invest in yet. So it's truly additive...the early signs are pretty positive." Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, Sam Peacock joined BBC News today where he told presenter Matthew Amroliwala about SSE's hopes for working with GB Energy, following Sir Keir Starmer's earlier announcement. Watch the excerpt below. Link to the full show in comments.

It is good to see more details about Great British Energy from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero this morning. The UK has fantastic natural resources, highly talented people and a great opportunity to become a clean energy superpower. The way to realise this potential is for government, industry and communities to work together. The UK already has a world-leading offshore wind sector where the focus should be on speeding up deployment. In other, earlier-stage technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, the government can play an important role in de-risking projects. As one of the biggest investors in mission-critical energy infrastructure in the UK we look forward to discussing co-investment opportunities with GB Energy, as together we create a more sustainable home-grown energy system.

"Driving rapid system transformation" In an important new report, the Royal Academy of Engineering set out what is needed to deliver a cleaner and more sustainable electricity system in Great Britain. ⬆ More renewables ⬆ More electricity networks ⬆ More flexible power generation for the days the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine These are just some of a comprehensive set of recommendations for policy makers, regulators and industry. We encourage you all to take a look 👀 https://lnkd.in/e_-9UYGp
