🍿 In a cinema near you: Episode 3 of Wild Spaces🍿 Episode 3 of Wild Spaces takes us deep into a Celtic rainforest, nestled within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. This ancient ecosystem is home to some of the rarest lichens in the British Isles—living indicators of clean air and a healthy habitat. By planting the right trees nearby, we help protect air quality and provide connectivity , safeguarding the rainforest’s future. Caring for these wild spaces now means future generations can experience their quiet magic—and brings us one step closer to restoring more landscapes to what they were always meant to be. 🌳 Wild Spaces is a partnership with Pearl & Dean that creates a new cinema spot that funds nature restoration projects in our National Parks UK. These projects revive nature, boost biodiversity, and improve access so more people can get out there and enjoy it. 📧 To find out more about becoming a corporate sponsor of the National Parks UK email partnerships@nationalparks.co.uk or visit https://lnkd.in/eW-twRbp. #WildSpaces #NationalParks #CorporatePartner #Pembrokeshire #Wales #Ecosystem #Rainforest #biodiversity #Nature

The landscape of Dartmoor National Park is defined by its stark, spectacular swathes of moorland. These upland expanses and the habitats they contain have their own value, but trees and human habitation alike are few and far between. It wasn't always like this, though. During the Bronze Age, people lived and farmed extensively on Dartmoor, and much of the land was still covered in forests. They built stone circles (of which 15 still survive), monuments and fortified settlements across the landscape. One of the most significant archaeological clusters is found at Merrivale, where there is a standing stone, a stone circle and a stone row. The latter is about 260 meters long and is shown in this picture. But as people flourished on Dartmoor, the clearance of the woods gathered pace, resulting in almost total deforestation. Lack of tree cover caused nutrients to leach out of the soils, accelerating the growth of peat bogs and undermining the viability of agriculture. This human-made ecological crisis was compounded by the climate turning colder and wetter. Eventually, life on Dartmoor became unsustainable. People largely retreated from the plateau, leaving a world of bogs and rock behind them. With the exception of a 300-year period in the Middle Ages, when the climate warmed up enough to allow year-round settlement to return to Dartmoor, this is largely how it has remained since. But in place of the lost forest are vital habitats like blanket peat bogs; in their healthy state these support distinctive communities of plants, invertebrates and moorland birds, and are vital stores of carbon. 📸 DNPA Our National Parks are 15 diverse landscapes where natural and human history intertwine in unique ways. Through this series, we aim to showcase the stunning views, rare wildlife and distinctive culture that make these places special.

🎉 HAPPY 15th BIRTHDAY South Downs National Park Authority 🎂 #SouthDowns #NationalParks #Birthday #Anniversary #UKNature
On Monday the South Downs National Park turns the big 1-5! The idea for the South Downs to become a National Park was first mooted way back in the 1920s. Nearly 80 years later, that dream became a reality when, on 31 March 2010, the Secretary of State officially designated the South Downs as England's newest and youngest National Park. Fifteen years on, a great deal has been achieved for nature, climate and communities. But, we face growing challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, water pollution and economic uncertainty. Later this summer, we'll be kicking off the process of drafting our new Partnership Management Plan. Involving dozens of stakeholders, the Plan will include our shared goals for nature, climate and people. So, this weekend, raise a glass (ideally one of the many brilliant wine, beers, spirits and soft drinks produced within the National Park) and let's celebrate 15 years of being a protected landscape for all to enjoy and cherish. Cheers 🍻 #SouthDowns #NationalPark
