🌿 Landscape-Scale BNG 🌿 Nattergal is currently restoring 2,500 acres of Nature across three wildlands: Boothby in Lincolnshire, High Fen in Norfolk, and Harold's Park in Essex. BNG provision on sites of this scale is particularly beneficial: 🦋 Transforming larger sites for Nature allows us to create diverse, interconnected habitats that can support bigger and more resilient populations of wildlife. Our sites offer diverse mosaics of different habitat types, which is key to sustaining the complex needs of species and allowing ecosystems to thrive over time. 🌍 The biodiversity units we provide help clients meet their mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain requirements, whilst contributing to large-scale Nature restoration that restores vital habitats and creates rich landscapes of scrub, grassland, woodland, wetlands, and more. This diversity supports both biodiversity and key ecosystem services, like carbon storage, flood alleviation, and soil regeneration. By working on a larger scale, we can deliver more lasting, meaningful benefits to nature than smaller, fragmented restoration efforts. 🌱 Our approach to these rewilding areas starts with kick-starter interventions, such as the spreading of green hay and digging ponds, then we leave Nature to take the lead. Free-roaming herbivores will be introduced to further drive natural processes, creating dynamic ecosystems that support a wide range of species. 📈 Even in the early stages of our projects we’re seeing Nature begin to bounce back, and we’re closely tracking progress through extensive monitoring programmes and academic partnerships. This World Rewilding Day, we hosted a cross-industry group of sustainability leaders to launch our new nature restoration project at Boothby Wildland, alongside our partners Nattergal Ltd and Wilder Carbon. Together, we explored our collaborative approach to impactful environmental investment, long-term carbon sequestration, and scaling up nature-based solutions to harness nature as a powerful climate solution. This #WorldRewildingDay, we celebrate the progress of our very first site, #BoothbyWildland in Lincolnshire. The three-year phased retreat from arable farming is now complete and Nature is taking the lead. In this short film, Nattergal’s Rewilding Landscapes Manager, Lorienne Whittle, explores the progress we’ve made, and our hopes for the future. Today, we are also co-hosting a special event with Arup, who have committed £1million towards Nature restoration at #BoothbyWildland, securing 10,000tCO2e of high-quality carbon removal credits over the next 30 years - certified by Wilder Carbon. Nattergal’s ambition of delivering Nature restoration at scale is only possible with the support of private finance, and we’re delighted to be joining Arup and Wilder Carbon to showcase this groundbreaking partnership. More good news for BNG. Nattergal has secured a Conservation Covenant with RSK Wilding for our Essex site, #HaroldsParkWildland in the Northern Thames Basin NCA. Our BNG units will now be added to the national register and the wildland will be compliance monitored by RSK for the next 30 years. Nattergal is proudly creating over 4,000 BNG (biodiversity net gain) units for developers across our three existing wildlands - with more sites planned for 2025! This week marks one year since the launch of Biodiversity Net Gain #BNG, the Government initiative which aims to ensure that development has a positive impact on our Natural environment   Since then, 43 Habitat banks have been listed on the National Register and tens of thousands of hectares of land are being restored for #Nature in the name of servicing a growing demand for units.    It is estimated that the BNG market, if correctly implemented, could be worth c. £200m annually - thus creating a potential £1bn pot for Nature by 2030. Newt News: A Win for Nature AND Developers In 2023, together with NatureSpace Partnership, as part of the Network Rail Organisational License, we set about restoring and creating ponds across #BoothbyWildland to rehome the #GreatCrestedNewt, allowing railway operations to progress. This week, the Newt Conservation Partnership issued their monitoring report and included a Boothby case study. “By 2024 Great Crested Newts were recorded in three of the six compensation ponds. What was arable land around the ponds is going through the rewilding process, becoming rough grassland providing good cover for the Newts on their short but potentially dangerous travels from the woodland to their breeding ponds. Great Crested Newts clearly took advantage of the new high-quality habitat very quickly. As other clean waterbodies are created or restored by the Nattergal team as part of the rewilding process, the Newts and the other plants and animals living in (or associated with) ponds will be able to once again thrive in this landscape” The report also notes that, as part of the wider programme: - Eight out of every 10 sites are colonised after 3+ years - The sites have double the occupancy rate of the average English pond. - More than half of the ponds created are already achieving ‘priority habitat’ status. - Four new ponds are created or restored for every occupied pond lost to development.
