The Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard's new research facility is a hub for life-saving discoveries, designed with sustainability in mind. Collaborating with PAYETTE, we worked with user groups to design thoughtful spaces responsive to their research needs. We provided integrated engineering services across the 30,000m² (320,000 ft²), six-floor facility, which includes laboratories, a children’s daycare centre, offices, seminar rooms, gardens and public spaces. The facility is engineered to minimise vibration, safeguard research from climate-related events, and surpass industry energy efficiency standards. How can waste power local neighbourhoods? The North London Heat and Power Project is investing in a replacement energy recovery facility with capacity to divert 700,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill each year and generate electricity equivalent to the power needs of 127,000 homes. We supported the North London Waste Authority's project planning process, securing support from local communities and conservation groups. The firm continues to advise the authority in the delivery stage of the development, providing multidisciplinary programme and project management services. The development includes a resource recovery facility that features a roof-mounted array of 2,235 photovoltaic panels – the largest in north London – and a 300,000-litre rainwater storage system. An engineer who designs bridges and writes poetry? Meet the legend who changed how we see the world. What if engineering wasn’t just about steel, concrete, and numbers? What if it was art? Philosophy? A way to inspire humanity? Enter Ove Arup. Most engineers build bridges. Arup built a legacy. Back in 1970, he did something unheard of for his time - he gave a speech. Not just any speech, but the Key Speech, a vision for how his company and the industry could do better. Not for profit. Not for fame. But to guide the future of engineering with one bold idea: "Engineering can change the world if done with humanity in mind." Let’s pause for a second. A VISIONARY SPEECH? From an engineer? This wasn’t standard operating procedure in the world of construction. Yet Arup wasn’t like anyone else. His philosophy? Total Design. In plain English: architects, engineers, and contractors working together - not in silos. Revolutionary in 1970 (and let's be honest, the industry's collaborative spirit still needs a kick up the backside). 💡 Here’s how it played out: When you walk across the Sydney Opera House or stand under the Centre Pompidou in Paris, you’re witnessing Arup’s ideas come to life. These weren’t just projects; they were collaborations that pushed boundaries. But Arup didn’t just build. He thought deeply. He believed engineering should: • Serve people. • Challenge the status quo. • Leave the world better than we found it. Sounds noble, right? But here’s the kicker: He actually lived it. 🖋️ In his 1970 Key Speech, Arup wrote: "Our work should be interesting and rewarding. Only a job done well, as well as we can do it - and as well as it can be done - is that. We must therefore strive for quality in what we do, and never be satisfied with the second-rate." 📖 So, why does this matter to you? Because Arup’s story isn’t just about bridges or buildings. It’s about thinking bigger. Whether you’re in engineering, business, or life, his legacy is a reminder: Collaboration and creativity win. 🔥 Here’s the challenge: Next time you tackle a project, don’t just ask, “How can I do this?” Ask: “How can I do this better, for everyone?” Arup did. And look where it got him: A name synonymous with innovation, beauty, and humanity. ------- 🔗 Join 2,000+ industry leaders staying informed with Civil Edge, our free weekly newsletter. Chair of Arup Group

I attended the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, where close to 3,000 global leaders, including more than 900 global CEOs, leaders from government, business, and civil society, gathered to address challenges, strengthen collaboration, and identify solutions to shape a better world. I had the opportunity to meet with leaders to discuss priorities like sustainable construction, incorporating nature in business, transforming the built environment, clean energy, resilience, and unlocking development and infrastructure finance. It was heartening to hear participants citing example of the amazing work that our people at Arup are doing, from Peru to Tokyo and Sydney, and everywhere in between. Arup’s views were sought and listened to, particularly on topics such as resilience, water, energy transition and climate risk. I felt incredibly proud of our 18,000 staff across the globe. Alice Charles, our Global Leader for Strategic Partnerships, joined me and here are five recurring themes that emerged from our meetings: 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. Over the next 10 years, environmental risks, led by extreme weather and a biodiversity crisis, will dominate the global landscape. We need strengthened collaboration and innovative solutions to tackle these threats. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁. For businesses, physical risks like extreme weather events and transition risks such as rising carbon pricing, are already transforming markets and reshaping business models. Our current building stock is vulnerable to climate change and investments in climate adaptation are essential. 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼. Fossil fuels still dominate 90% of energy use. Urgent action is needed to close investment gaps, scale key technologies and accelerate net zero readiness with solutions such as scaling clean hydrogen production and using carbon capture technologies. 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀.  The retrofit market plays a vital role in reducing the building footprint and achieving net zero. It requires substantial capital allocation but offers a $3.9 trillion market opportunity by 2050, with often straightforward returns through energy savings. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁. Unsurprisingly, AI came up many times in discussions. We highlighted hyperscale data centres, which require robust energy and water infrastructure to support them. There is an urgent need for the technology industry to work closely with the engineering and construction industry in the rollout of AI to address the climate and biodiversity crisis. #WEF25 #Davos #WeAreArup

Kate Jarritt, our Director and UK, India, Middle East, and Africa Lead of Strategy Consulting, was delighted to speak with Sir John Armitt on Tuesday at our 80 Charlotte Street auditorium, as part of a hybrid event organised by our Energy Early Careers team.   As one of the UK’s most eminent civil engineers, Sir John shared invaluable insights on infrastructure, government policy, net zero opportunities, and the challenges of planning and judicial reviews. He also spoke about the formation of the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) – a merger of the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) and the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) – which he has been instrumental in shaping.   Reflecting on his diverse career, Sir John offered advice that resonates across industries: "Never say no. Because you never know what taking that opportunity you're being offered may open up that you can't see today."   A huge thank you to Sir John and our Energy Early Careers team for making this event possible!   #SustainableGrowth #NetZero #FutureofInfrastructure #ShapingABetterWorld
