Marc Cairns is Managing Director at New Practice, experts in place working across the UK and Ireland. The practice exists to develop the community, creative and cultural capacity of places and to connect people with the decision making processes that underpin lived experiences. The practice is committed to embedding social value in place-based projects across the UK and beyond through community engagement, meanwhile use, retrofit & reuse and strategies for community; ensuring that community-centred briefs and shared decision making shape the future of the built environment. New Practice, a RIAS and RIBA chartered practice, became part of Civic in Autumn 2024 through a shared commitment to the design and delivery of places that have a positive impact on the environment and enable people to lead healthier, happier lives. Building on existing and past work towards LGBTQIA+ advocacy in architecture, Marc is a founding organising committee member of Open Plan Scotland, a volunteer led network for members of LGBTQIA+ community who are studying or working in architecture in Scotland. He was previously part of ArchitectureLGBT+. Marc is a Design Council Expert and also currently a Director of Many Studios - an arts organisation, creative workspace provider and community interest company based in the East End of Glasgow. He also sits on the Board of Cure Crohn’s Colitis - a charity established to exclusively fund new patient-centric research. He was recently appointed as a Trustee of the Springburn Winter Gardens Trust, tasked with saving and repurposing the A Listed Winter Gardens and developing its Park location for the benefit of the local community. NEWS: We are excited to share that we have been selected as finalists for the 'C40 Cities Glasgow competition' to regenerate Glasgow's Canalside in the north of the city alongside O'DonnellBrown and our wider design team. The project which is being led by C40 Cities, Scottish Canals, and Glasgow City Council has an ambition to create a new zero carbon, sustainable, and resilient community around the historic Applecross Wharf on the Forth and Clyde Canal. The competition presents an opportunity to build upon the recent canalside regeneration projects and continue to unlock the potential of the canal for the city. New Practice recently concluded the delivery of a city-wide Stakeholder Engagement & Communication programme as part of the masterplan development for the ‘Custom House Quay and Carlton Place’ project, led by Hawkins\Brown and working with our colleagues at Civic Engineers. Located on the River Clyde, the project presents a unique, once in a generation opportunity to reconnect with our waterfront and create a sustainable, resilient, and distinctive destination within the city. The project is funded by the Glasgow Region City Deal and the masterplan has been developed in response to Glasgow City Council's City Development Plan, Strategic Development Framework for the River Clyde and the City Centre Strategy (2024-2030). Since 2021, we have delivered an ongoing series of engagement activities, speaking with a diverse range of residents and end users. The insights gathered through this programme have played a key role in shaping the masterplan's design. Through conversations with local residents and businesses, as well as targeted workshops with key future users - such as Glasgow Disability Alliance and City of Glasgow College - we have identified key challenges that the masterplan development aims to address. https://lnkd.in/eRt_tU8Z #Glasgow #Regeneration #ThrivingTogether

Exciting news! New Practice are collaborating with Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT) to revitalise Rosefield Mills, a Category B listed building at risk, situated in a prime riverfront spot in Dumfries and considered to be one of the last remaining large-scale Victorian industrial buildings in the town... The long established vision is to convert the Mills into a dynamic mixed-use community asset. The focus of our work includes engaging with the community and stakeholders, crafting business strategies, and conducting market assessments in partnership with DHBT. #RetrofitReuse #Community #Heritage #ThrivingTogether

George Square is changing. The redevelopment of George Square is part of the wider Glasgow City Council Avenues projects. The project is being led by John McAslan + Partners with support from a wide range of design experts including New Practice. The project is being delivered in phases. The first to begin will be the works to George Square and the surrounding streets. The Square will soon close to the public to allow construction works to commence. To raise awareness of the closure and to remind the people of Glasgow about the ambitions goals for the project, New Practice collaborated with our friends at Reeves & Bond to design and build a bold, colourful and ultimately reusable exhibition structure for the Square. Using readily available and off the shelf construction materials, we crafted a not only a space for information but also for gathering - establishing a new temporary meeting point within the Square.
