PLANNING PERMISSION for Sun Barn! ☀️🏡 We're delighted to share that Sun Barn, our latest hyper-efficient barn conversion, has secured planning approval! 🎉 Rooted in Solar House principles, Sun Barn will harness solar energy to aid the heating and cooling of the building, ensuring a comfortable, low-energy home that sits harmoniously within its rural setting. The design retains the existing barn while introducing two sunrooms, maximising natural light, views, and passive solar gains. By reusing the structure and carefully selecting low-carbon materials, Sun Barn will be carbon negative within 32 years. Collaborative architecture practice delivering clients their dream home, driving sustainable design + inspiring change
About us
No building as usual. That’s our mantra, and we’d love it to be yours too. We’re all living under the threat of a different, less liveable planet, and our mission is to deliver dream homes to our clients, drive forward sustainable design, and inspire change. We’re transparent risk-takers and positive disruptors. We’re generous with our knowledge, to our clients, to our partners, to curious students – in fact, to all our fellow humans. We question everything, hold ourselves accountable, and get our hands dirty, literally. By sticking our own necks out, we do whatever we can to make our clients feel comfortable and ready for what lies ahead. Studio Bark was founded in 2014 by Wilf Meynell. Our rigorous environmental ethos and ambitious design approach has been recognised within the industry and beyond; our unique Paragraph 84 private home Periscope House was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs. We have a successful track record securing planning permission for ambitious designs on challenging sites across the UK. Our portfolio of built work encompasses residential and community projects with a specialism in bespoke homes. We have extensive experience delivering projects through Paragraph 84 (previously Paragraph 80) of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). In addition to architectural design services outlined in the Bark Client Journey, we offer site finding and site evaluation services drawing upon our detailed knowledge of planning policy. Depending on the project, specialist construction and fabrication services can be provided through our contracting arm, Studio Bark Projects. We have developed the widely-published U-Build flat pack construction system for aspiring self build clients. We’re also passionate about teaching and run regular student build programmes. In 2021 we launched ‘No Building As Usual’ as a more collaborative cross-sector approach to student live builds.

Futurebuild 2025 - what a week! 🚀 A huge thanks to all of you who visited us at the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) stand. You made our week truly inspiring and we loved hearing about new ideas and upcoming projects shaping our industry. Our highlights: 💡 Joining ACAN on their buzzing stand right at the entrance - setting the scene for the show and sharing our vision for a post-carbon industry 💡 Presenting our brand new SmallCarbon™ carbon tool for small practices and the U-What?! acoustic panel at Nick Newman and Hannah Towler’s talk 💡 Thomas Bennett speaking with Architecture Today about the #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex, and exploring their exhibition 💡 Welcoming students from Waltham Forest College to participate in the ACAN stand and discussing the future of construction with the next generation of industry leaders We developed SmallCarbon™ with funding from Innovate UK, and we're now seeking further funding to make the tool as easy and affordable as possible, helping small practices report and measure carbon on projects. If you know of any available pots, we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch at info@studiobark.co.uk Massive thanks to Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) for hosting (and building!) such an inspiring space, to Futurebuild, and to everyone who stopped by to chat, share insights, and support our work. ♻️ The U-Build stand has been taken down and stored ready to reconfigure into alternative future uses... watch this space! Let’s keep pushing for real change. Until next time! ✨ #Futurebuild2025 #netzerobuilding

We've loved having the opportunity to bring #ProtestArchitecture to the Victoria and Albert Museum in collaboration with U-Build. The exhibition is in it's final week closing on Friday 28th February - so come and see the installation before it's gone! Featuring Barricade, a modular U-Build structure, and Beacon, a bamboo tower inspired by protest design, the installation asks: How can we use design to disrupt, resist, and reimagine? Following #CircularDesign principles, all components will be taken down and given another life in future projects - watch this space! Presented by the Victoria and Albert Museum and RIBA. 📍 Architecture Gallery, V&A Museum 🎟 Free entry #BarricadeAndBeacon #ArchitectureActivism #VAMuseum #StudioBark

Easton Bavents – A home that moves with the landscape. Coastal erosion is reshaping the East Suffolk coast, claiming an average of three metres per year. In 2020, three homes at Easton Bavents were lost to the sea. Rather than leaving the land her family has called home for nearly a century, our client Anne pursued a pioneering solution: Four demountable homes designed with our U-Build system. These modular timber structures can be assembled, moved, and reassembled, offering a climate-resilient response to an ever-changing coastline. But change isn't always embraced and despite expert warnings that the land is at risk of erosion within 20 years, planning approval was denied with the council arguing that one of the homes sits outside the designated Coastal Change Management Area (CCMA) and is not at immediate risk. Now, Anne is taking it to appeal. We believe in proactive solutions that anticipate, rather than react to, environmental change. Coastal resilience isn’t just about emergency response, it’s about long-term, adaptable design that works with nature, not against it.
