How would you feel if you discovered your 'mental health practitioner' was untrained? Many people are unaware that THOUSANDS of untrained people are offering mental health services to workplaces and individuals. They call themselves psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists. Many are coaches. And yet they have no clinical expertise. And it's perfectly legal That's because in the UK, anyone can call themselves a "psychotherapist" or even a "psychologist" without formal training. As a clinical psychologist, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of therapy when done right—and the serious harm caused by unqualified practitioners. That's why I'm deeply concerned about the lack of clarity around who is truly qualified to provide mental health care. Without proper regulation, the dangers continue and those seeking help face significant risks of emotional harm. Implementing clear standards for mental health professions like psychotherapy and counselling would ensure both individuals and businesses have reliable guidelines to make informed choices. In cases of malpractice, regulation would also provide a structured path for recourse, raising the standard of care and protecting the public. Mental health is too important to be left unregulated. An inspiring evening thanks to Dr Marcellus Baz BEM and Vicky MacClure. When wrestling with brutal cuts to public and voluntary sectors, the cost of living and the impact this is having on our local communities. A clear message that there are solutions and we have no other choice but to stand together. The message was clear to ‘work together’ to implement the changes we need to see. A fantastic turnout of public, private and voluntary sectors ready to have meaningful conversations. Mental health was firmly on the agenda as a growing need and the concern was broad in how it was effecting young people and adults locally and nationally. Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS) has been the bedrock of providing therapies locally for anyone in need and will continue to do so. Thank to Clive Foster MBE and Yasmin Rehman for their contribution on the evening their dedication and insights into the fantastic work they are committed to and pivotal in delivering.

Today the 10th of October marks World Mental Health Awareness Day. Talking therapies should be readily available and accessible to all regardless of economic circumstances, gender, race and age. Yesterday marked suicide prevention day. In more recent periods, local and national suicide rates have begun to rise, with Nottinghamshire County's suicide rates increasing from 8.7 per 100,000 people (in 2016-18) to 10.3 per 100,000 (in 2019-21). These figures are slowly rising, services around the country are under constant pressure. Services and funding must be allocated accordingly to those most in need or risk.

Like many special charities it’s a tough time! Knowing that local businesses are walking by your side is uplifting. This week the John Lewis & Partners design team came in to help with design plans, provide some support with ideas and help to update the place so it echoes our vision for hope and wellbeing.

What an exciting and busy few weeks we have had at Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS). It’s always wonderful to work with passionate like minded individuals and organisations. Meet Stu who has helped us launch with @lesley watson from Metropolitan Thames Valley housing a wellbeing offer for their residents. Mental health of our communities is suffering with the compounding factors around us. This new and ground breaking project will enable individuals to access therapy. Working in a dynamic and collaborative approach we hope to prevent crisis situations and MTVH their residents feeling supported, encouraged and enabled to live their lives to their full potential. Therapy sees life changing results and in this creative collaboration we are excited to see a transformative journey.
