A new milestone has been achieved for next stage of our onsite plant equipment performance measuring software, Aquila. 🏗️🚧 Paul Thorpe FCIOB, Director at Okana leading on Digital and Data services commented on the Aquila platform update: “We are at the stage where we are scoping and defining user profiles to understand their specific needs and the challenges they can overcome through the use of Aquila. “Extensive research has already taken place on the viability of measuring plant equipment and how the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the Aquila software can benefit users. Aquila’s technology allows for greater optimisation by automatically determining the plant and equipment’s productivity output through machine learning algorithms in the platform. This means no more performance predictions, the Aquila technology will accurately monitor and measure in use, down time and emissions output.“ We're looking forward to bringing this software to market, bringing a new age of efficiency for those overseeing plant and equipment on site. New for #womeninbim is our “Women in BIM Live” event series, where we will be inviting subject matter experts to share key learning on the topics influencing the #builtenvironment today. We begin with how we can leverage #AI to bridge existing skills gaps and have invited global training and development specialist Andrew Johnson, Associate and Learning Lead at Okana as our first guest. Moderated by Vicki Reynolds, Women in BIM Strategic Advisor and Technical Director at ONE Creative environments (ONE) , during this hour of learning, Vicki and Andrew will look at how the #constructionindustry addresses the long standing skills gap due to an ageing workforce, evolving technology and the increasing demand for specialised expertise. Andrew will further explore how traditional training methods struggle to keep pace with industry needs, creating an urgent need for innovative solutions. #GenerativeAI presents a transformative opportunity to bridge this gap by enhancing how professionals learn, develop skills and access critical knowledge.

Last week, we attended Futurebuild 2025 to share the latest in digital construction 🚀 Okana's Dr Dean Douglas, digital consultant, and Murillo Piazzi, senior digital consultant, joined the FutureX Digital Disruptors stage to share key insights into Digital Twins and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Dean gave a Digital Twins 101, covering the fundamentals for a successful digital twin journey. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Understand the digital twin basics and build your own definition tailored to your goals 2️⃣ Define what you want from your digital twin early on and consider when in its lifecycle it will provide the most value 3️⃣ Identify and manage the data that is crucial for your digital twin to function effectively 4️⃣ Understand the unique value of your organisation's data and actively participate in developing your digital twin to reap significant benefits 5️⃣ Building a comprehensive digital twin takes time; focus on incremental improvements and measurable gains along the way to your ultimate goal. Murillo joined the 'BIM 2 Twin' panel, exploring the evolution from BIM to digital twins. Key insights: ✅ Although BIM and digital twins are separate entities, BIM can help create good foundations for the implementation of a digital twin ✅ AI is lowering the bar for organisations who are planning to implement BIM and digital twin ✅ New requirements such as the Building Safety Act are pushing organisations to implement digital workflows to comply with requirements. This week, Okana has the privilege of hosting Market Építő Zrt., a leading Hungarian construction company, as they embark on their journey to integrate AI into their organisation. With eight of their senior management team visiting, we aim to explore how AI can enhance efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in construction. Today, we invited Allister Lewis from Automated Data Driven Design, who delivered a great session on the evolution of construction technology and the rise of #AI in #AEC. Some key takeaways: 🔹 Investment in AEC Software is Booming – Projected to double by 2030, emphasising the need for businesses to stay ahead. 🔹 Automation is Key – Freeing architects and engineers from mundane tasks allows for greater creativity and efficiency. 🔹 AI in Design & Construction—From generative design to madeCNC fabrication, AI is shaping the future of building. 🔹 Technology Adoption Challenges – Overcoming resistance to change and ensuring interoperability across tools is critical. 🔹 Automated Data Driven Design Marketplace for Software & Consultancy – A centralised hub could transform how the industry adopts and evaluates new solutions. This visit is an exciting opportunity to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and inspire transformation. As AI continues reshaping AEC, companies must act now to remain competitive in an evolving landscape. Thank you so much to Allister for sharing his expertise! We look forward to the rest of the sessions and seeing how Market Group applies these insights. 💬 How is AI transforming your construction projects? Let’s discuss it! #AIinConstruction #AEC #ArtificialIntelligence #ConstructionTechnology #GenerativeDesign #Automation #OkanaGlobal #MarketGroup #AIInnovation

Scotland and Canada - on the road to retrofit 🌎 Last week at Buildings Canada's #BUILDEXVancouver, Jon Stinson, Okana's Environmental and Sustainability lead, shared cross Atlantic lessons from Scotland to Canada, offering insights into retrofitting buildings on mass and at speed for net zero. Key takeaways include: 🔹A holistic approach to retrofit always starts with fabric first calibrated with strong support from technologies 🔹 Retrofit KPIs must be beyond compliance, using carbon, cost, comfort, and climate to define a good retrofit 🔹 De risking retrofit can only be done through data driven decision making 🔹 A country’s retrofit success requires decisive, centralised knowledge leadership Built Environment - Smarter Transformation A highlight from Jon’s presentation was a deep dive into Scotland’s retrofit journey, from 1999 to today, and how its proven strategies can be applied in Canada. Despite the 5,600 km distance Scotland and Canada share the same challenge: achieving net zero in the built environment. By exchanging knowledge and solutions, we can work together to deliver a sustainable future. ♻️ Thank you to our Scottish retrofit clients, collaborators, and partners for providing evidence to underpin this presentation The University of Edinburgh, Historic Environment Scotland, Renfrewshire Council, Inspired Design & Development Ltd, OnGen Ltd, Edinburgh Napier University, Zero Waste Scotland, Scottish Energy Officers Network (SEON), and West Linton Community Heat Team.
