See protein, DNA and RNA molecules that make life work, in nanoparticles, viruses, bacteria, cells and tissue. We believe that understanding science at a molecular level will fundamentally allow you to unlock new discoveries, so we created our flagship product, The Nanoimager. We built the world's first desktop compatible compact super-resolution microscope, but we did it our way. Our teams have a restless enthusiasm to bring technologies like super-resolution to a new community of researchers and we continue working until barriers of accessibility and affordability are addressed. Our mission is to ensure research and collaboration tools are available to those willing to ask why or how things are the way they are and answer questions never asked before. We can’t wait to see and hear about what new questions you will ask!

Today we highlight a recent work from the groups of Mathew H. Horrocks and Lynne Ragen from the The University of Edinburgh and the group of Sonia Gandhi from The Francis Crick Institute in London. The article titled Super-Resolution Imaging of Proteins Inside Live Mammalian Cells with mLIVE-PAINT, describes an innovative approach for #SuperResolution #imaging of live cells. The traditional #DNAPAINT approach relies on fixed cells, where proteins of interest are labeled with specific #antibodies that are fused to a single #DNA strand. Researchers then supplement the cells with a fluorescently-labeled complementary DNA strand. The annealing of both strands leads to a well-defined signal that can be recorded and analyzed. While this approach is a very useful #SMLM technique, it is not compatible with live cell imaging, as it requires both labeling with antibodies and the introduction of fluorescent DNA strands. Here, the scientists sought an alternative labeling method that is compatible with live cells: Instead of using antibodies, they engineered two sets of fusion proteins: The first, a fusion of their proteins of interest with a specific peptide; the second, a fusion of a fluorescent protein and another peptide, that partners with the first one. The fusion proteins are well tolerated by cells and they do not require any external labeling reagents, making them excellent candidates for #LiveCellImaging. The binding of the peptides concentrates the fluorescent protein around the protein of interest, allowing the scientist to record the precise cellular localizations with the #Nanoimager. 🌟 It's #FluorescenceFriday and this week we are back with another chapter in the #HistoryOfMicroscopy: today we celebrate the 392 birthday of Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek, the pioneer microscopist who is considered by many as the father of #microbiology. 🔬 🔎 Van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch politician and a draper, who took interest in lens-making in order to check the quality of the threads in his shop. He used his new lenses to construct a simple single-lens #microscope. Even though this wasn't the first microscope that was ever developed, the simple, yet, effective design provided a superior image quality to the ones previously made. Thanks to that, for the first time in documented history, Van Leeuwenhoek was able to see tiny moving objects, which he deduced were living creatures, later to be known as #microorganisms. 🔬 👨🔬 Following a series of letter exchanges with the Royal Society in London, the latter acknowledged that Van Leeuwenhoek has indeed discovered a whole new domain of life, today known as #bacteria and other unicellular organisms. Throughout his career he also identified and described many other microscopic entities, such as human cells, plant cells, #parasites, and others. Despite some skepticism in the early days, his evidence was convincing and his work was well recognized by the Royal Society and other distinguished institutions. It is hard to imagine the world of scientific #research without the innovative work of Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek.🌟 #HistoryOfScience #LifeSciences #SuperResolution #optics #microscopy #research

✨ Huge congrats to the Di Vizio Research Lab at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for winning the 2024 EV competition! 🎉 As part of their prize, the lab will receive a complimentary ONI Nanoimager for three months to support their cutting-edge research on extracellular vesicles (EVs). 🔬 Led by Dolores Di Vizio, MD, PhD, the lab is pioneering investigations into the molecular mechanisms driving tumor progression in solid human cancers. Their work emphasizes intercellular communication and includes profiling large oncosomes and other EV populations using next-gen sequencing and mass spectrometry. Their research has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, and Avon Foundation. A special thank you to all who participated in this year’s competition!
