We’re delighted to share that our team has successfully secured planning permission for a rooftop extension and terrace to a duplex apartment in RBKC! This property is classified as a Higher Risk Building under the Building Safety Act 2022, a crucial UK legislation introduced to enhance building safety following the Grenfell Tower tragedy. As architects, it’s our responsibility to integrate fire safety from the very start—considering factors like fire spread prevention, escape routes, and the use of non-combustible materials. Our application included a fire statement, demonstrating that safety was a fundamental part of the design process. Earlier this month we attended the inaugural Biophilic Design Conference at the Barbican centre, organised by Dr. Vanessa Champion, founder of The Journal of Biophilic Design. This crowd-funded event highlighted the importance of connecting people to nature through thoughtful design. Over 40 inspiring speakers joined both in-person and online, for TED Talk-style presentations exploring the profound impact of biophilic design on mental health, well-being, the environment, and even economic benefits. Topics ranged from sensory designs in schools and the influence of light in workspaces to the psychological and financial advantages of sustainable, nature-integrated design. These themes align deeply with our practice’s ethos, especially around creating healthy homes and introducing sustainable design. It was very inspiring to be part of a gathering that highlights the essential role designers play in shaping spaces that support health and well-being. The conference ended with a musical performance in the Barbican Conservatory. We thoroughly enjoyed sharing insights about ways to Maximise Wellbeing in Residential Environments at LiGHT Expo London yesterday. Our talk focused on how to create homes that are not only beautifully lit but which also prioritise health, sustainability, and modern technological needs. Designing a wellbeing-first residential lighting scheme goes beyond aesthetics, it’s about ensuring the right balance of light temperature, lux levels, and personal preferences. We explored how to tailor lighting solutions to fit each homeowner’s unique personality, neurodiversity, health considerations, and lifestyle, much like a personalised healthcare plan. The London art and design scene is vibrant this month, we attended Focus, the Design Centre’s flagship autumn show for a preview of the latest launches and collections. Some of the brands that caught our attention included GP & J Baker's Eldron collection, featuring original colourways and fresh palettes, as well as nature-inspired wallpapers by Zardi & Zardi. Bespoke upholstery by Amy Somerville and colourful lighting designs from Pooky were also among the standout presentations, showcasing a range of innovation and craftsmanship. #DesignShow #FocusLondon #InteriorDesign
