What an amazing day it has been at the ASEAN Carbon Forum 2024, organized jointly by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and Malaysia Forest Fund, with strategic partners from The World Bank and Permian Global. YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of NRES officiated the Forum by emphasizing that as Malaysia takes over chairmanship of ASEAN next year, we want to support operationalising the ASEAN Strategy on Carbon Neutrality, an initiative endorsed during Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN last year. Thank you again to NRES and MFF for this opportunity for Bursa Malaysia to share on the concept of the ASEAN Common Carbon Framework (ACCF) on behalf of the ASEAN-BAC Malaysia. I also took the opportunity to introduce the Malaysia Carbon Market Association and our aspirations to collaborate with other carbon market associations within the ASEAN region, to support the implementation of the ACCF. The premises of the ACCF are that we have run out of time to address the closing window of opportunity on climate actions and that, we can and we should optimize resources and capability within the ASEAN region to collectively implement effective climate mitigation projects. Attending the IGEM is home coming, having being involved in the IGEM since its inception in 2010. Took the opportunity to attend a clean energy event launch by YAB Datuk Sri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and visited the energy fraternity, especially the solar industry. This includes the Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project (KRCP) area, also known as the Northern Kuamut Forest Reserve, and neighboring conservation areas like Danum Valley, Imbak Canyon, and Maliau Basin. Scientists have used environmental DNA analysis to identify 125 species of aquatic and terrestrial animals in the remote Corubal River in West Africa. The identified species include critically endangered animals as well as species that weren’t previously known to occur in the region. The Corubal flows through Guinea and Guinea-Bissau; because of its remote nature, there haven’t been a lot of large-scale attempts to study the biodiversity in the river and its basin. The President of Palau, Surangel S. Whipps Jr., has been calling for a moratorium — an official pause — on deep-sea mining in international waters for more than two years now, and he continues to reiterate his position.
