Invitations to our In Conversation event with Tom Copley went out to Planning Futures members this afternoon. Please note that this event will now take place on Friday 29th of November at 08:30 at Central Hall Westminster. Breakfast rolls, fruit, tea and coffee will be available from 08:15. Full event description below. Many thanks as always to our sponsors hgh Consulting & Vistry Group for making this series possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Conversation with Tom Copley In May, Sadiq Kahn won a historic third term as Mayor of London on a manifesto that placed a renewed emphasis on tackling the housing crisis. In addition to announcing fresh delivery mechanisms, such as the introduction of Land Assembly Zones and new Mayoral Development Corporations “to boost overall housing supply and drive regeneration”, the Mayor also committed to delivering 40,000 new council homes by the end of the decade. We are delighted therefore to be joined for this In Conversation session by Tom Copley, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development, to unpack the implications of these policy commitments for planning and housing practitioners working in London. Having been appointed to his current role in 2020, Mr Copley is the key figure in overseeing the Mayor’s two affordable homes programmes, including the first-ever City Hall initiative dedicated to council homebuilding. Prior to this he was a London Assembly Member for eight years, during which time he served as Chair of the Assembly’s housing committee.

Planning Futures is an organisation dedicated to promoting excellence in the field of Town and Country planning.
About us
Planning Futures is a think tank dedicated to developing new ideas for planning in the UK. As we face ever growing pressures to build more homes, and deliver the infrastructure that our economy needs to thrive, it is essential that we get our planning policies right. As the only think tank dedicated solely to this field, we offer an independent, pragmatic approach to planning issues. Our research programme is informed by our expert advisory board, and provides a strong evidence base for unlocking UK’s development potential. Our 2017/18 programme focuses on delivery through the planning system at local level. We will be making the case for properly resourced planning departments across England and for greater transparency, consistency and effectiveness in decision making by officers and at committee.

We are looking forward to this week's edition of the Planning Futures Supper Club with Toby Lloyd. Mr lloyd is one of the UK's most respected housing experts. He was head of policy at Shelter from 2011 until 2018, and Special Advisor to the then Prime Minister from 2018-2019. In 2017, along with Josh Ryan-Collins and Laurie Macfarlane he authored the book Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing, which explored the relationship between land economy and housing policy, and outcomes, in the UK. Mr Lloyd now works as an independent housing consulting. Following the usual Supper Club format, Mr Lloyd will give a brief after dinner speech outlining his view on how the planning and housing sector will need to change in the coming years in order to ensure that we deliver the housing that the country needs and that all are adequately housed. Many thanks to our sponsors Vistry Group and hgh Consulting for sponsoring.

That's all folks... another conference season completed with my return from the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. Our third and final panel fringe event with Planning Futures brought together a great and lively panel Kit Malthouse, Richard Clewer Wiltshire Council, Helen Fadipe MBE, FRTPI Royal Town Planning Institute, Kate Henderson National Housing Federation (and me). A wide ranging jaunt through proposed planning changes, strategic planning, why delivering houses matters, design, 5-year land supplies and delivering the conservation areas of the future. Vistry Group were pleased to hold a roundtable discussion supported again by Cratus Group Dan Humphreys with an invited group of Lords, MPs and Councillors unpicking the issues of delivering housing through partnership working. A, perhaps, surprisingly upbeat conference with a significant focus on the four leadership candidates. There were worthwhile discussions being had on the planning and housing topics with various views being shared as to what went right, and what went wrong over the last few years. Great to catch up with others Centre for Cities Anthony Breach Centre for Policy Studies Elliott Mears Dr Victoria Hills MRTPI FICE FRSA MCMI CMgr Simon Creer Hannah David Cian Bryan Fiona Howie Justin Griggs Fjolla Krasniqi John Cotton Samuel Hughes Nick Kilby MCIPR I failed to secure a 4th lanyard so had to make do with a pen to ensure balance!

The final event in our conference series! We are delighted to have partnered with Vistry Group at all three major party conferences this year to host events on partnership working in housing delivery. Yesterday’s panel at The Conservative Party explored how conservative-held councils could contribute to housing delivery across all tenures and how the Conservatives in Westminster can work across the aisle to support constructive planning and housing policy. Many thanks to our wonderful panelists. Kate Henderson Kit Malthouse Andrew Taylor FRTPI Helen Fadipe MBE, FRTPI Richard Clewer Thanks also to Vistry Group for partnering with us on this series.

Our Director, Hannah David, was delighted to chair a fringe session at The Conservative Party Conference this morning hosted by the National Housing Federation, The Guinness Partnership and Karbon Homes. The panel featuring Kate Henderson, Andrew Boff, Aisha (Asia) Cuthbert, Jack Lee and Lucy Dixon explored the role that social housing might play in the future of the Conservative Party. Following our own events at the Liberal Democrat and Labour Party conferences, it was clear again this morning that stakeholders across the planning and housing sector agree on many of the challenges that we face in ensuring that all are adequately housed - and the steps that both Government and Opposition need to take to address them. We are looking forward to our own panel at 15:30 today, where we will zoom in on the challenges of partnership working between developers, housing associations and local authorities in delivering the homes that we need.
