POWERful Women
Non-profit Organization Management
PfW is working for greater representation of women at the top of the UK's energy industry.
About us
Chaired by Katie Jackson, and based at the Energy Institute as project partner, POWERful Women (PfW) is working for a diverse, inclusive and gender-balanced energy industry in the UK. The energy sector is tackling a wide range of important issues – from energy security and affordability to building a more sustainable low carbon future. Because industry competitiveness relies on being able to attract and retain a diverse pool of talent capable of bringing fresh perspectives, PfW believes much stronger female representation is needed at the top tables. By bringing together a mix of industry, academic and political leaders – spanning a wide range of technology sectors, services, roles and viewpoints in the industry – we work to support and encourage energy companies to attract and cultivate female talent and appoint more women to senior roles as part of building stronger businesses, adapting to changing markets and engaging better with consumers. Our "40 by 30" goals are for women to occupyat least 40% of middle management and leadership roles in the UK energy sector by 2030. To achieve this we SUPPORT, CHALLENGE and CONNECT. Find out more about our work by visiting our website, subscribing to our newsletter or getting in touch.

BUILDING AND MAINTAINING AN INCLUSIVE WORKFORCE – a #casestudy from So Energy How does an organisation go beyond just diversity to create a true culture of belonging where everyone can thrive? In 2023, So Energy launched their first Diversity and Belonging Strategy, a three-part, five-year approach to promote conscious inclusion. Multiple initiatives include the launch of a Women’s Affinity Group, leadership programmes, mentoring and coaching. The positive impact is already visible: ✅ Internal mobility has skyrocketed, with a record 45% vacancies filled by internal candidates in May 👏 ✅ Women make up 41% of the So Energy workforce (above industry average) with a goal to reach 40% women in leadership by 2030 (aligned with PfW’s target) 👏 👩🏻💻 FIND OUT HOW THEY DID IT! Read the #casestudy here: https://lnkd.in/e88EdmFx 💬 “At So Energy, we know that to do our part and deliver our net zero target by 2040, we must reflect thecustomers and communities we serve. Building a diverse team is half the battle but making people from all walks of life feel included, appreciated, and celebrated is the other half.” – Amanda Drugnick, People Director Our thanks to So Energy, one of the members of our Energy Leaders’ Coalition, for sharing this example of good DEI practice that is making a difference. #inclusion #diversity #DEI #consciousinclusion #ERGs #womeninenergy #networks #leadership #coaching

📣 to organisations in the energy & utilities sector, please register to take part in this year's Inclusion Measurement Framework run by Energy & Utility Skills, providing crucial data leading to valuable insights on #diversityandinclusion 📣 to CEOs & leadership teams - please take the additional standalone leaders survey 🔗 👇 🙏 #datamatters #DEI
💭 What is the Inclusion Measurement Framework? It is an annual report demonstrating the equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across the energy and utilities sector. There is also an opportunity for sector leaders to get involved in a standalone survey which provides insights on leading inclusion and their own diversity journeys. 📊 The results identify where change needs to happen for the sector to represent and reflect the communities it serves. We are concerned to read this research on sexual harassment in the workplace published last month by Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) . Out of the thousand female ICE members responding to their survey, nearly half said they had witnessed or been a victim of sexual harassment. • 45% of respondents had been harassed in the last 4 years, citing 1016 instances • nearly 40% of those did not report it • 13% women left their employment or asked to be moved as a result. It is also disappointing to see that for those who did report the harassment, most reported negative outcomes in terms of solving the problem. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eCrawwsY

‘Diversifying the Energy Sector: EDI initiatives that succeed’ - blog ✍🏻 Check out this blog from UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) looking back at their event that brought together 70 people from across energy and academia to discuss progress and challenges in delivering EDI projects. Our Head of PfW, Georgina Worrall, chaired a discussion on "What's next for EDI in energy?" where the excellent panellists delivered some critical insights and calls to action: 1. Make everyone feel welcome in the sector. Create new avenues for young people, with an open door to apprenticeships. 2. Minorities who feel able to speak up about their experiences may help to inspire others who feel different. 3. We shouldn’t forget that it’s often the people who are not in the room who need convincing. 4. Talk to young people, listen to them and don’t shy away from difficult topics like climate change. and fossil fuels. 5. Good quality data is the key to analysing what changes we need to make. 6. Organisations need to focus on support, workplace culture and representation.
