About us
The Energy Institute (EI) is the chartered professional membership body for people who work across the world of energy. Our purpose is creating a better energy future for our members and society by accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero. We do this by: -Attracting, developing and equipping the diverse future energy workforce -Informing energy decision-making through convening expertise and advice -Enabling industry and consumers to make energy lower carbon, safer and more efficient A registered charity, incorporated by Royal Charter in 2003, the EI is licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to offer Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician status to engineers, and by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status. We are also unique in granting Chartered Energy Manager status. The EI was set up in 2003 as a result of a merger between the Institute of Petroleum (IP) and the Institute of Energy (InstE). Both Institutes had a proud and distinguished heritage developed over many years supporting their particular energy sectors. Increasingly these sectors have converged, creating an integrated global energy market which has been mirrored by the development of the Energy Institute - established to address both the depth and breadth of the subject. Today , the EI is home to a range of collaborative initiatives, including the G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, SafetyOn and POWERful Women. We host the annual International Energy Week, EI Awards, publish New Energy World Magazine and the Energy Barometer, and provide the Toolbox web app helping the energy workforce learn lessons from incidents and get home safe.

☀️China forces other regions to up their energy transition game Concern over China’s dominance of the #cleantech supply chain has triggered other countries to take action – with a focus on the development of their own domestic manufacturing capabilities backed by government subsidies, tax incentives, funding and import tariffs, according to Rystad Energy. Plus, 81% of #renewable additions in 2023 were cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives, offering countries a ‘compelling business and investment case’ to triple renewables by 2030, says International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). 🔗Read more: https://ow.ly/4Qh350TAW7u 🍂During October, exclusive member content is available to all. 🌍 Energy Institute has published new guidance on green hydrogen production. The potential for low carbon hydrogen — produced through electrolysis using renewable energy or biomass gasification is increasingly recognised for its potential role in decarbonising our economy. Green hydrogen can be utilised in various ways: - 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤: Conversion to ammonia for agriculture or as a marine fuel. - 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥: For hard-to-decarbonize sectors like transport and heating. - 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞: For power generation. Scaling up green hydrogen production will require the development of production plants, either co-located with renewable power sources such as onshore and offshore wind farms or with hydrogen users. The Energy Institute’s publication offers high-level guidance for developers and operators of green hydrogen production plants, addressing key topics including: - Certification schemes for green hydrogen. - Design considerations for electrolysis and bio gasification. - Co-location with power-generating plants or end users. - Business models, including power-purchase agreements. - Construction and operational requirements. - Relevant standards and regulations from the UK, US, and EU. - Managing fugitive emissions. This guide is an essential resource for business planners, project managers, engineers, HSE managers, and designers - providing an in-depth introduction to green hydrogen production. ‘Guidance on green and low carbon hydrogen production’ is available here: https://lnkd.in/e6FKt_vs Watch our pre-launch webinar where authors DNV discuss the publication: https://lnkd.in/eZhA-JSZ #HydrogenEconomy #GreenHydrogen #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy
