Today's takeover is from me, Mihaela Hondrea, I'm one of the Screening Managers here at Reed Screening. Halloween, celebrated on the 31 of October is a debated holiday, rich in history, tradition and cultural significance.  It has originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The Celts believe that on this day, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to wander the Earth.   Its name comes from " All Hallows Eve" which is the night before All Saints Day, a Christian holiday honouring saints. Over time the two holidays merged, mixing ancient pagan and Christian traditions.   Trick-or- Treat, one of the most beloved Halloween traditions, is believed to have originated from a practice called "souling", where poor people would go door-to-door on All Saints Day, receiving food in exchange for prayers for the dead.   When it comes to decorations, pumpkins have become synonymous with Halloween. Carving a pumpking, comes from an Irish myth about a man called Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil and was condemned to roam the Earth with only a hallow-out turnip to light his way. When this tradition reached America, pumpkins replaced turnips simply because they were easier to carve.   In 2023, around 47% of British celebrated Halloween, while 20% of them stated it is their favourite annual celebration. When people were asked what they loved most about Halloween, 27 % said they loved the costumes of others on social media. Where only 24% answered sweet treats, the most associated thing with this holiday. Halloween increased massively in popularity with the spending in 2023 reaching over £1billion and marking a 38% increase compared to estimates from previous years. #reedscreening #insights #takeover #lifeatreed #backgroundscreening #pioneeringhiring

Today's takeover is from me, Sarah Easton, I'm Senior Operations Manager here at Reed Screening. This week marks National Vegetarian Week. The aim of the week-long event is to inspire people to experience new meat-free dishes and demonstrate that you can love them just as much as your favourite meat dishes. Celebrating this week highlights the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and the positive impacts on not only animal welfare but also the environment, something that we all could do more to help. According to Goodland and Anhang, replacing 25% of livestock products with alternatives would liberate as much as 40% of current world grain production. That is without mentioning the benefits you as person could feel by eating more plant-based foods. What are those benefits I hear you ask. 📍 Better digestion - Eating more fruit and vegetables helps to increase the diversity of your gut microbiome, leading to better gut health. 📍 The Fibre effect – can lead to a number of health benefits including, lower cholesterol, better bowel health and more stable blood sugar levels. In its natural form this is obtained by eating more plant-based foods. 📍 More energy/Better Sleep – Replacing sugary snacks you will start to notice improved focus and better concentration. 📍 Improve heart health - A study from the 2019 study from the Journal of American Heart Association found that middle-aged adults who ate diets higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal products had a lower risk of heart disease. 📍 Better skin – Fruit and vegetables have a high water-content and consuming more of them means your skin will look brighter and more hydrated. Whilst I don’t think I am fully ready to give up a medium rare steak, I personally, have started to reduce the amount of meat that I consume on a weekly basis, and I have already felt some of the benefits mentioned above. If you want to take part, you could switch a couple of meat meals for vegetarian ones (recipes to be shared upon request), join the conversation by sharing experiences or learn something new by taking a workshop #reedscreening #insights #takeover #lifeatreed #backgroundscreening #pioneeringhiring

In partnership with the Better Hiring Institute (BHI) and industry experts, we are pleased to launch the Better Hiring Toolkit for Construction, giving a foundation of free best practice guidance on hiring for the sector. Working collaboratively with The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), and the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), the free toolkit brings much needed practical, simplified guidance to support construction business with hiring new employees. With handy templates and key takeaways, the toolkit provides advice on vetting potential new recruits, as well as information for employers on their obligations when it comes to issues like the validity of CSCS cards and modern slavery, which is sadly still rife across the construction sector.
