  • A full day of discussions at #EmpowerCymru focused on the role of renewables in shaping a strong, modern industrial strategy for Wales. Director Jessica Hooper took part in a panel session today, highlighting how renewables are already attracting significant investment into Wales. She also pointed out the immense potential for growth and well-paid jobs provided we address our biggest challenge: the grid network that supports energy delivery. Transmission and distribution lines are the essential lifeblood our energy system needs to thrive. For Wales to become a leading hub for the clean energy transition, investing in grid infrastructure must be our top priority. The most important and impactful project that industry, governments, and regulators can collaborate on for the future of #cymru.

Having previously analysed overall steel demand for building out the UK’s offshore wind pipeline to 2050, the latest report by UK Steel looks at the facilities and interventions needed to ensure the UK's supply chain serves this demand 🏗️ Commenting on the report, which was published today, RenewableUK's Head of Supply Chain, Ajai Ahluwalia, said: "This report highlights the vast scale of the industrial opportunity for the UK if we’re able to ramp up the production of steel to manufacture large high-value components such as turbine towers and foundations for offshore wind projects here and abroad. This aligns well with our sector's Industrial Growth Plan which shows that overall we have the potential to triple the UK's offshore wind manufacturing capacity over the next ten years and secure our position as a leader in a surging global market. Steel production can be an engine of economic growth, and we’re committed to work closely with the steel industry and the Government to establish ways we can attract billions in private investment and ensure we’re internationally competitive". 📰 https://lnkd.in/e7AFBFx2

🏗️ The UK’s offshore wind boom is a £21bn opportunity, but most of that steel demand could go overseas.⚡ The UK’s offshore wind sector will need 5.6 million tonnes of steel every year as it grows. The industry has a pipeline of up to 25 million tonnes, worth billions in steel. Yet, less than 2% of the steel components used in the last five years were fabricated here, and the amount of UK steel used in those is likely even lower. New statistics released today show that we have the capacity and the expertise to meet the needs of the offshore wind boom right here in the UK. Currently, UK steelmakers can provide 51% (13Mt) of demand, including 45% of offshore wind plate needs. To boost that total, the industry needs strategic investment through the Steel Strategy and National Wealth Fund. A new report released today by offshore wind consultancy LumenEE, commissioned by UK Steel, shows that UK steelmakers could supply up to 86% of offshore wind steel needs. 🛩️ Lumen Energy & Environment's report also points out that uplifting UK steel capacity and capability will mutually benefit national defence needs, so any investment is a mutual benefit to both growing industries and to national security. That means: ✅ Keeping billions in the UK economy ✅ Securing thousands of skilled jobs ✅ Strengthening Britain’s industrial and national security future The UK has the chance to lead the green energy transition with homegrown steel. Now is the time to invest, build, and power the future. 🔗 Let’s make it happen: https://lnkd.in/e7AFBFx2 #UKSteel #OffshoreWind #GreenGrowth #IndustrialStrategy #Defence #UKMfg #Manufacturing

ABP News Release: Welsh Government Economy Secretary addresses community of innovators at ABP’s EVA South Wales Innovation Day. 💡 🏭 Yesterday, we welcomed Rebecca Evans MS, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, as a special keynote speaker at our Energy Ventures Accelerator (EVA) South Wales Innovation Day. Addressing an engaged audience of innovators, entrepreneurs, academics and businesses, she re-emphasised the vital role played by ports in creating ecosystems to accelerate the energy transition and announced Welsh Government’s plans to establish a dedicated investment team for Port Talbot. Organised as part of ABP’s Energy Ventures Accelerator (EVA) programme, the event brought together a community of innovators from industrial businesses, start-ups, academia and politics to the Welsh capital, with some startups travelling from overseas to be in Wales. Max Harris, ABP’s Group Head of Strategy & Sustainability, who leads the EVA initiative, said: “Industrial Rejuvenation was a consistent theme of our Innovation Day in South Wales, as we connected industry players and startups to help foster innovation ecosystems within our ports to accelerate cost-efficient decarbonisation.” “Positive momentum has been building rapidly since we launched our EVA programme in June last year. We have spoken to over 160 energy transition startups and we have learned a lot about the challenges they face and how ABP can support their growth”. The audience also heard from a range of clean energy startups and innovators, who presented their products and propositions on stage. These included: • Sperra – a 3D concrete printing innovator based in California, building FLOW anchors and floating dock technology.  • ACUA Ocean – manufacturer of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) capable of transporting heavy robotics and sensor technologies in rough seas to support the offshore energy and defence industries.   • Hynamics – focused on low-carbon hydrogen production and a key ABP partner at the Port of Barry’s Clean Growth Hub • Material Evolution – producer of low carbon cement using waste products from heavy industry to decarbonise the use of concrete in construction • OXCCU TECH LTD – producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), combining captured CO2 and clean hydrogen with an innovative process 👉 Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/ekcTxqNU Ralph Windeatt / Andy Reay / Lex Hanham / Ashley Curnow / Helen Thomas / Pressiana Naydenova / Cathy Hall / Andrew Clarke / Michael Goddard / #EnergyTransition / #Wales / #IndustrialRejuvenation / Rebecca Rosser Tomás / Kieran Borrett / Jack Stenson / Hugo Nicholls / Jason Cotrell / Christina Kim / #ABPVentures / Tata Steel / Luciana Ciubotariu / Celtic Freeport / RenewableUK Cymru / Swansea University
